As we get ready to welcome in the new year, we just want to say Thank You to all those who have supported the Dundee and District SPCA in any way, shaoe, or form.
We truly appreciate you helping us to help animals.
We also want to urge you to remember that while you may celebrate when the clock strikes midnight, animals don't enjoy the loud noises as much as you do.
π Safety Tips for Pet Owners πΎ
π₯ 1. Keep Pets Indoors During Fireworks
Fireworks can terrify animals. Keep them inside in a quiet, closed room with curtains drawn. Turn on calming music or the TV to help mask the noise.
π 2. Create a Safe Space
Set up a cosy corner with their favourite blanket, toys, and water. Let them hide if they need to β donβt force them out. Familiar scents help them feel secure.
π 3. Desensitise to Loud Sounds
In the days leading up to Diwali, play soft firework sounds at low volume and reward calm behaviour. Gradually increase the volume to help them adjust.
π 4. Update ID Tags & Microchips
If your pet gets startled and runs off, updated tags and microchip information make a huge difference in getting them home safely.
π« 5. Keep Sweets, Diyas & Decorations Out of Reach
Chocolate, sugar, and artificial sweeteners are toxic to pets. Diyas, candles, and fairy lights can burn or entangle curious animals β keep them high up and secure.
π 6. Stay Calm Yourself
Pets take cues from you. Stay relaxed and speak in a soothing tone β your calm presence reassures them more than anything else.
πΏ 7. Consult Your Vet if Needed
If your pet struggles with severe anxiety, speak to your vet ahead of time. There may be natural calming aids or prescribed options to ease their stress.
πΎ 8. Support Strays Too
Leave out fresh water and a safe spot for stray dogs and cats. Avoid lighting fireworks near areas where animals might be hiding.
