National Burns Awareness Week 06- 12 May 2026

This week marks National Burns Awareness Week, observed from the 6th to the 12th of May under the theme *Protect, Prevent, Heal.*

During winter, the use of heaters, open flames, paraffin stoves, and other unsafe heating methods increases the risk of fires, especially in informal settlements and overcrowded homes.

Burn injuries remain a serious public health concern in South Africa. It is estimated that about 3.2% of the population suffers burn injuries every year, with children being the most affected.

💡 Know. Act. Save a Life:

If you or someone else gets burned, remember the following:

🛑Prevent: Keep hot liquids, fire, and electricity out of children’s reach.

Remove: Take off clothing or jewelry near the burn immediately.

Cool: Run clean, cool water over the burn for at least 20 minutes.

Cover: Use a clean cloth or sterile dressing (avoid home remedies).

Seek Help: Get medical attention immediately for serious burns.

🚫Do not use ice, butter, or toothpaste, as these can make the injury worse.

Burns can happen in seconds, but recovery can take a lifetime.

💪 Let’s protect our families, educate our communities, and support survivors with dignity and compassion.

Burn injuries remain a serious public health concern in South Africa. It is estimated that about 3.2% of the population suffers burn injuries every year, with children being the most affected.

Many of these incidents happen at home, often when children are left unattended near hot water, stoves, or open flames.

You can prevent burns by keeping fires attended at all times, placing heaters and stoves on stable surfaces, and keeping children far away from heat sources.
Always switch off heating devices before going to sleep.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH – CLOSING AWARENESS

As we close April, we reaffirm a critical truth:
Child protection is not a monthly campaign — it is a lifelong responsibility.

WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE?

Child abuse is any action or failure to act that causes harm to a child’s physical, emotional, or psychological wellbeing.
It includes:

• Physical abuse – hitting, burning, shaking, or causing injury
• Emotional abuse – humiliation, threats, rejection, or constant criticism
• Sexual abuse – any inappropriate sexual contact, exposure, or exploitation
• Neglect – failure to provide food, shelter, safety, medical care, or education

WARNING SIGNS OF ABUSE Be alert to:
• Unexplained bruises or injuries
• Sudden fearfulness or withdrawal
• Aggressive or unusual behaviour changes
• Poor hygiene or untreated medical conditions
• Reluctance to go home or fear of specific people
• Loss of interest in school or activities

Every adult has a responsibility to act when a child is at risk.

If you suspect abuse:
• Listen to the child calmly and without judgement
• Do not ignore or dismiss concerns
• Report immediately to the relevant authority
• Do not confront the alleged abuser directly if it may endanger the child

REPORTING CHILD ABUSE & THE LAW

Key Laws Protecting Children

• Children’s Act 38 of 2005 – ensures safety, care, and protection of all children
• Sexual Offences Act (2007) – protects children from sexual exploitation and abuse
• Domestic Violence Act 116 of 1998 – protects children in violent home environments

Legal Responsibility
In South Africa, anyone who suspects child abuse or neglect must report it by law.
Failure to report can be a criminal offence for mandated professionals.

WHERE TO REPORT
• SAPS Emergency: 10111
• Childline South Africa: 116 (24/7 free helpline)
• Department of Social Development / Social Worker
• School Principal or Child Protection Officer

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER REPORTING
• A formal investigation is opened
• The child’s safety is assessed immediately
• Protection measures are implemented (safe placement, counselling, legal action if needed)

At Her Wings, we believe:
Awareness builds knowledge.
Knowledge builds courage.
Courage builds protection.
Protection saves lives.

SAFE CHILDHOODS FOR ALL

❄️ HER WINGS WINTER DRIVE ❄️

This winter, let’s come together to bring warmth, dignity, and hope to those in need. 💙
