National Burns Awareness Week 06- 12 May 2026
This week marks National Burns Awareness Week, observed from the 6th to the 12th of May under the theme *Protect, Prevent, Heal.*
During winter, the use of heaters, open flames, paraffin stoves, and other unsafe heating methods increases the risk of fires, especially in informal settlements and overcrowded homes.
Burn injuries remain a serious public health concern in South Africa. It is estimated that about 3.2% of the population suffers burn injuries every year, with children being the most affected.
Many of these incidents happen at home, often when children are left unattended near hot water, stoves, or open flames.
You can prevent burns by keeping fires attended at all times, placing heaters and stoves on stable surfaces, and keeping children far away from heat sources.
Always switch off heating devices before going to sleep.
💡 Know. Act. Save a Life:
If you or someone else gets burned, remember the following:
🛑Prevent: Keep hot liquids, fire, and electricity out of children’s reach.
Remove: Take off clothing or jewelry near the burn immediately.
Cool: Run clean, cool water over the burn for at least 20 minutes.
Cover: Use a clean cloth or sterile dressing (avoid home remedies).
Seek Help: Get medical attention immediately for serious burns.
🚫Do not use ice, butter, or toothpaste, as these can make the injury worse.
Burns can happen in seconds, but recovery can take a lifetime.
💪 Let’s protect our families, educate our communities, and support survivors with dignity and compassion.
