[ADVICE FOR UNIVERSITY APPLICANTS]
It's varsity applications time. When you're considering what to apply for, this is our advice. These are observations. They are not factual neither are they intended to initiate debate. This post is merely aimed at educating the less informed. We will postpone debates for another day.
1. It is ill-advised to enroll for BA courses. That’s the easiest way to secure unemployment as a graduate.
2. If you going to attend a college , you will struggle to find employment if you studied something offered in the BCom stream at University. The BCom university guys will take all the jobs. Colleges are mostly beneficial for students in the engineering stream.
3.Yes, law is cool but it’s honestly for students from well-off families. If you know you need to quickly graduate and go back home to buy mealie meal, stay away from law. Rather study part-time later in life while generating an income in another profession.
4. I would recommend Bachelor of education, especially if there’s an immediate need for you to help out at home. Salaries are good in the beginning but if you looking long term there is not a serious basis for growth in income. Not everyone will become a principal.
5. BSc is risky in this country. A good flex for smart people but not all of it will secure you employment. BSc students end up doing PGCE cause they don’t get jobs. In my opinion the only BSc programs I would recommend is:
BSc Mathematical Science
BSc Computer Science
BSc Information Technology
BSc Acturial Science
BSc Quantitative Risk Management
BSc Statistics
BSc Data Science
6. BCom graduates secure jobs faster than anyone from what I have observed and they also get paid well. I would highly recommend it. Your Accounting, Banking, Finance, Marketing etc with the exclusion of Industrial Psychology and others related.
7. I don’t know much about health and engineering, please give your 2 cents if you have valuable information.
8. Always aim to be enrolled at one of the top 10 Universities , employers will never admit but they have their biases . Most hire from 3 or 4 universities of their preference and more often than not it’s institutions in the top 10 of best universities in the country.
NSFAS only funds one qualification, there’s no room for error. Make sure the right course is chosen. Companies are hiring everyday, however, they have a small bracket of skills they’re looking for-make sure you that person they’re looking for by studying the right course.
