🎶✨ Music, Culture and Inclusion ✨🎶

Our recent Indigenous Instruments Workshop introduced people with disabilities to the vibrant sounds and cultural significance of the African marimba. Facilitated by Hope Nyinko Chiwalo, participants learned about the history of the instrument, developed rhythm and playing skills, and experienced the joy of making music together.

Music offers many benefits, including improved co-ordination, concentration, confidence and social interaction. Through shared musical experiences, participants connected with one another while celebrating African heritage and culture.

The workshop ended on a high note, with the group performing *Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)* together which was a wonderful celebration of unity, learning and the power of music to bring people together. 🎵🌍

🎶✨ Celebrating Culture, Connection and Inclusion Through Music ✨🎶

Our recent Indigenous Instruments Workshop introduced participants to the rich heritage of the African marimba, creating an engaging and empowering experience for people with disabilities.

Facilitated by renowned indigenous instrument player and cultural practitioner, Hope Nyinko Chiwalo, the workshop provided participants with the opportunity to learn about the history, cultural significance and playing techniques of one of Africa's most celebrated musical instruments.

Beyond preserving and promoting African cultural heritage, music offers numerous benefits for people with disabilities. Playing instruments such as the marimba can improve hand-eye co-ordination, upper limb function, motor planning and concentration. Participating in group music-making also encourages communication, social interaction, teamwork and a sense of belonging, while supporting emotional well-being and self-expression.

Through rhythm, movement and shared musical experiences, participants developed new skills, built confidence and connected with others in a meaningful way. The workshop highlighted how music can transcend barriers, bringing people together while strengthening cultural identity and community participation.

A heartfelt thank you to Hope Nyinko Chiwalo and Step Ahead Production for sharing his knowledge and passion, and to all participants who embraced this wonderful opportunity to learn, connect and celebrate African heritage through music.

Today we honour Freedom Day, not just as a memory of 1994, but as a living, unfinished promise.

In South Africa, freedom must mean more than political liberation, it must mean equitable access to healthcare, dignity in care, and the right to live well for all, especially for people with disabilities.

Freedom is not a moment, it is a movement. It is the right to exist with dignity, to access care without barriers, to be heard in spaces that too often exclude, and to live without being pressed, silenced, or erased.

Yet for many, freedom is still limited by inaccessible systems, under-resourced services, and unequal opportunities for rehabilitation and support.

We stand in solidarity with every person still fighting — not only to be free, but to receive the care, recognition, and inclusion they deserve.

May we not only celebrate freedom where it exists, but demand it where it does not.

May we build systems that include, not exclude.
May we protect, practice, and extend freedom through just and accessible healthcare.

Because none of us are truly free until all of us are.

🌟 Breaking Barriers, Building Belonging 🌟

On 17 April 2026, Phila Sonke Wellness Initiative and Lead Change Developments hosted their second annual Inclusive Sports & Fun Day bringing people of all abilities together in one shared space 💙

From aerobics and team sports to fun races and games, the day showed that when barriers are removed, everyone can participate, connect and thrive 🙌

In support of Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, Parkinson’s Africa joined us to raise awareness about Parkinson’s Disease reminding us of the importance of education, support and community.

✨ Inclusion is not about doing things separately, it’s about doing life together.

✨ Building Futures in Dobsonville, Soweto ✨

Last week's group session in Dobsonville was about more than skills, it was about building pathways to entrepreneurship.

We had the privilege of hosting an Occupational Therapist with a postgraduate degree in Business and Practice Management, who facilitated an empowering session on:

📌 Business planning basics
📌 Understanding income & expenses
📌 Simple financial management skills
📌 Laying foundations for sustainable entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship can be a powerful tool for inclusion, dignity, and financial empowerment and this is just the beginning.

We are proud to walk this journey alongside our Dobsonville community as we build confidence, capacity, and opportunity together. 💛
