Endumbeni Cultural & Creative Arts Centre – 15 Years of Impact (2010–2025)
Celebrating 15 Years of Artistic Innovation, Cultural Enrichment & Community Empowerment
1. The Founding Vision (2010)
Endumbeni Cultural & Creative Arts Centre was founded in 2010 in Delmas, Mpumalanga, by Sipho Mahamba, a committed cultural advocate and visionary community leader.
Before founding Endumbeni, Sipho Mahamba had been involved in several arts and cultural organisations, where he consistently fought to uphold integrity, fairness, and proper governance. However, limited authority and recurring challenges in those organisations often hindered meaningful progress.
Recognising Sipho’s determination and leadership potential, Mr. Jeremiah Skhosana, a respected elder and arts mentor, advised him to establish his own organisation where he could freely invest his vision, ideas, and principles.
That decision led to the birth of Endumbeni Cultural & Creative Arts Centre — a platform built on accountability, creativity, empowerment, and community service, dedicated to transforming lives through arts and culture.
2. Institutional Growth and Recognition
Over the past 15 years, Endumbeni has grown into one of Mpumalanga’s most respected community-based cultural organisations.
It has consistently delivered impactful programmes that link education, culture, and social development, earning recognition and support from both provincial and national institutions.
3. Major Funding and Strategic Partnerships
Endumbeni’s transparent management, strong delivery record, and community impact have attracted funding from major institutions:
2018: Funded by the National Lottery Commission (NLC) for the Artists in Schools Programme, empowering artists to teach and mentor learners in Mpumalanga.
2019–2020: Supported by the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation (DCSR) for community-based arts, youth development, and cultural projects.
2019: Received a grant from the National Arts Council (NAC) to strengthen creative industry development and build institutional capacity.
2023: Received direct funding from the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) for the Artists in Schools Programme, confirming national recognition of Endumbeni’s leadership and governance excellence.
2021–2022: Featured in the DCSR Annual Report as one of the province’s most active and impactful community arts organisations.
4. Administrative Leadership and Financial Accountability
In 2014/15 and 2015/16, Endumbeni was appointed by the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation as the Administrator of the Victor Khanye Arts and Culture Forum, following years of mismanagement in that structure.
Endumbeni managed the Forum’s funds from 2013/14 to 2014/15, restoring financial transparency, accountability, and community trust.
Under its leadership, local artists benefited from the Forum’s funds for the first time, setting a new benchmark for responsible and ethical arts governance.
5. Language Advocacy and Education Transformation
Endumbeni has been instrumental in advancing isiNdebele language education and cultural pride:
In 2017, it formally called for the introduction of isiNdebele as a Home Language in Delmas schools.
By 2020, four schools in Delmas had successfully implemented isiNdebele teaching.
As of 2025, the programme has expanded to twelve (12) schools — Delmas (4), Ogies (2), Witbank (2), Middelburg (2), and Belfast (2).
This initiative has created employment for several isiNdebele educators, while strengthening cultural identity and language inclusion in schools.
This achievement remains one of the most meaningful community-led education and language revival efforts in South Africa.
6. Artists in Schools Programme – Provincial and National Leadership
A cornerstone of Endumbeni’s success is its leadership in implementing the Artists in Schools Programme, a national initiative linking arts education with community development.
In December 2022, Endumbeni signed a five-year Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Mpumalanga Department of Education to implement the programme across the province.
In 2023, it was appointed by the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) as the Implementation Agency for the programme in three districts of Mpumalanga Province.
The programme was successfully implemented for two consecutive years, demonstrating outstanding project management and artistic excellence.
During its first year, Mpumalanga—under Endumbeni’s coordination—ranked among the Top 4 provinces nationally at the National Arts Festivals.
Programme Impact Highlights:
45 direct job opportunities were created for artists across Mpumalanga Province, giving them formal placement in schools to teach and mentor learners.
The initiative also generated business opportunities for small enterprises within the creative industries, including costume design, stage production, sound services, and visual arts.
Endumbeni further assisted artists and community organisations to access funding through mentorship and proposal support.
It conducted various arts workshops focusing on performance, business development, cultural management, and creative education — building sustainable capacity within the arts ecosystem.
Through this programme, Endumbeni not only advanced the arts in education but also stimulated the local cultural economy and supported creative livelihoods across three districts.
7. Creative Empowerment, Festivals and Public Engagement
Endumbeni continues to nurture creativity and provide platforms for artistic expression, including:
The Mpumalanga Schools Arts Festival, which rewards learner excellence and promotes collaboration among schools.
Community arts workshops, exhibitions, and theatre productions that empower youth and emerging artists.
Partnerships with traditional councils, municipalities, and education institutions to integrate arts into community development and social cohesion.
8. Cultural Preservation and Heritage Advocacy
As a guardian of cultural identity, Endumbeni promotes:
Ndebele traditional art, music, design, and storytelling as central to the province’s cultural character.
The Cultural Heartland Corridor, positioning Delmas and the Nkangala region as key destinations for cultural tourism.
Heritage preservation projects that honour royal legacies, traditional leadership, and community memory.
9. Sustained Impact and Vision for the Future
For 15 years, Endumbeni Cultural & Creative Arts Centre has exemplified integrity, innovation, and transformation. Its mission continues to bridge heritage, education, and economic empowerment, changing lives and uplifting communities through culture.
> “Empowering Communities through Creative Arts and Cultural Heritage.”
Looking ahead, Endumbeni aims to:
