Darling Wildflower Society Promoting the conservation of flowers of the threatened lowland Sandplain & Renosterveld Fynbos in The West Coast flower region

FLOWER LINE: 068 151 5692
Darling is known as the flower of the West Coast, and the abundance of flora and natural flowers is undoubtedly its biggest asset. The Darling Wildflower Society has held a show virtually every year since that first show in 1917. The ideals expressed by the founders still hold true today. They wanted to display Darling's God-given wealth for the world to see. At the same

time they promoted the conservation of flowers amongst the farmers of the district, who have since maintained the botanical diversity of the region over several generations. The West Coast flower region, an integral part of the Cape Fynbos Kingdom, boasts more than 1200 species of flowering plants. About 80 of these are endemic to the West Coast and known nowhere else. The rich flora of the West Coast occurs on mainly three different soil types, culminating in three distinctive vegetation types, namely, Strandveld, Renosterveld and Sandveld. Darling lies within the Cape West Coast Biosphere reserve in the centre of the threatened lowland sandplain and renosterveld fynbos.

Exciting News for Darling and Groenkloof Nature Reserve! ๐ŸŒฟ

We are delighted to share that the Darling Wildflower Society has received grant support from the Rowland and Leta Hill Will Trust for our work at Groenkloof Nature Reserve.

This support will help us continue our efforts to conserve, restore and protect one of Darling's most important natural spaces. From habitat restoration and biodiversity conservation to environmental education and community involvement, this contribution will strengthen the work being done to ensure Groenkloof remains a thriving natural asset for future generations.

A heartfelt thank you to the trustees for recognising the value of this work and for investing in the conservation of our unique natural heritage.

We would also like to thank our members, volunteers, partners and supporters who continue to make these initiatives possible through their time, dedication and passion.

Together, we are helping nature flourish in Darling. ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒผ

This week we joined the Society for Ecological Restoration's Make a Difference Week by getting our hands dirty and making a tangible impact in the landscape.

Restoration is about more than planting vegetation. It is about rebuilding ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and creating resilient landscapes for future generations.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their time and energy to this initiative. Every invasive plant removed, every seed planted, and every hour volunteered helps move us closer to healthier, functioning ecosystems.

Together, we can make a difference.

Make A Difference Week starts soon, and we invite you to join us in restoring the endangered Renosterveld landscapes surrounding Darling.
Once covering vast areas of the Western Cape, Renosterveld is now one of the rarest vegetation types in the world. Through restoration efforts like these, we can help rebuild biodiversity, improve ecosystem resilience, and protect the natural heritage of the Cape Floral Kingdom for future generations.
Join us for a hands on conservation experience where volunteers will assist with ecological restoration activities while learning more about the incredible plant diversity that makes this region so special. ๐ŸŒผ
Whether you are a nature lover, conservation enthusiast, student, or simply looking to give back, your contribution can make a real impact.

Make a difference with the Society of Ecological Restoration during make a difference wee
Join us for a meaningful hands-on experience during Make A Difference Week as we take part in the Ecological Restoration of Renosterveld in Darling.

Renosterveld is one of the most threatened ecosystems in South Africa, with only about 5% of its original extent remaining due to agricultural transformation. This makes restoration efforts not just important, but urgent.

This event offers a unique opportunity to:
- Contribute to the restoration of a critically endangered ecosystem
- Learn about the Cape Floral Kingdom and its incredible biodiversity
- Be part of a community working towards conservation and resilience

Whether you are passionate about conservation, curious about restoration, or simply want to make a difference, this is your chance to get involved.
