THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING A PROPER STATEMENT :

When you have been a victim of crime it is very important to give a detailed statement to the SAPS.

For instance in a robbery, don't just say I woke up with suspects in the house pointing a gun at me. Be specific :

- How did they enter
- How did they look (anything you can remember might help, even the colour of their socks)
- What language did they speak
- Did anyone have prominent facial marks
- Earrings, tattoos etc
- Colour and patterns of masks they were wearing
- Did the suspects maybe call each other a name

We all understand that it is very traumatic and you might not think clearly when you give your initial statement to the first police member on scene, therefor take a photo of your statement when you are done.

Read through it later and should you remember any other details that you forgot to mention then contact the detective to make an additional statement, even if it is a week or 2 later.

In many cases it is the small details that seems insignificant that might be the things that can link a suspect to a crime.

Call us should you need any assistance or advice.
