For Joy Merryweather Smith, Scouting isnโt simply something she has done for 50 years, it is her happy place. ๐โ ๐
Recently honoured with her 50-year Long Service Award at the Western Cape Adult Awards Ceremony, Joy reflected on a lifetime of guiding, mentoring, playing, camping, learning and, most importantly, giving young people the opportunity to grow. ๐๐๐ โScouting is such a passion of mine, it fills my soul. It is my happy place. I have never had a day that I did not want to go.โ
From becoming a Brownie at just 7ยฝ, to volunteering in Scouting from the age of 13, Joy has spent decades creating spaces where young people can be themselves, have fun, connect with others and discover what they are capable of. Joyโs story is a wonderful reminder that when you serve with passion, the impact can last for generations. ๐๐โ
Her advice to parents considering volunteering? Give it a term. Put on your โfeel-good suitโ and see where the adventure takes you. ๐๐ฅพ
