Small recognitions matter too ⚜💜🙏 Over the past week, we've explored SCOUTS South Africa's Adult Leader Awards. We've talked about nominations, different types of awards such as Commendations, Service and Merit Awards and the process behind formal recognition.

💗⚜ 🙏 But there's one final message we want to leave you with:
Recognition doesn't always have to be a national medal. Sometimes, a meaningful thank you can be a simple Thank You Certificate or a Thanks Metal pin. It can be a moment at a campfire where the Group comes together to acknowledge the volunteers who make Scouting possible. Another opportunity to say thank you could be at a Group event in front of parents and young people. There are many ways to acknowledge the impact of our Adult volunteers. 👏✨👍

So, let's continue to recognise and thank the amazing men and women who make Scouting possible in our communities while shaping our country’s leadership. 👀⚜ 🏆🙏 Look around your Group. Recognise who is making a difference and nominate them for an Award or give them a heartfelt “Thank You!”.

For Joy Merryweather Smith, Scouting isn’t simply something she has done for 50 years, it is her happy place. 💜⚜ 😃

Recently honoured with her 50-year Long Service Award at the Western Cape Adult Awards Ceremony, Joy reflected on a lifetime of guiding, mentoring, playing, camping, learning and, most importantly, giving young people the opportunity to grow. 🏆🙏💜 “Scouting is such a passion of mine, it fills my soul. It is my happy place. I have never had a day that I did not want to go.”

From becoming a Brownie at just 7½, to volunteering in Scouting from the age of 13, Joy has spent decades creating spaces where young people can be themselves, have fun, connect with others and discover what they are capable of. Joy’s story is a wonderful reminder that when you serve with passion, the impact can last for generations. 🙏👏⚜

Her advice to parents considering volunteering? Give it a term. Put on your “feel-good suit” and see where the adventure takes you. 💜🥾

This week we are highlighting the immense value of recognising the difference Adult Leaders are making in our lives and the lives of young members in Scouting. 💜⚜👏

We have spoken about the various Awards available and now we are taking you behind the scenes to see how the process unfolds from nomination to awarding the SCOUTS SA Award. 🏅🔃 This process is designed to make sure Awards are considered fairly and consistently across SCOUTS South Africa.

🙏⚜ Your application is reviewed at Regional level, moves through the appropriate approval process, is considered by the National Awards Committee, and then goes to the Chief Commissioner for final oversight. The process can take up to four weeks. ☑💜Good recognition is worth doing properly.

⚜🌍🚨 Nominate SCOUTS South Africa’s next Chief Scout

The term of our current Chief Scout, Mr Khonzaphi Mdaka, comes to an end in February 2027. As we prepare for this transition, the Scout Board is inviting members of SCOUTS South Africa to nominate individuals to serve as our next Chief Scout.

The Chief Scout is a volunteer leadership role calling for a person with natural leadership and communication skills, a commitment to servant leadership, and a deep understanding of Scouting and its role in a changing South Africa.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a strong record of active Scouting (registered on SD), leadership experience, integrity and a commitment to the Scout Law and Promise, together with the ability to inspire and unite our diverse Movement around a shared vision for the future.

👉⚜ Who can be nominated?
Candidates must have a minimum of 10 years of registered adult volunteer experience within SCOUTS South Africa. National or Regional leadership experience is advantageous.

👉⚜ How to nominate?
☑️Nominations must be supported by a Proposer and Seconder, who must both be registered SCOUTS SA members in good standing, and must include a completed nomination form, motivation and Scouting CV.
☑️Nominations close: 21 October 2026 at 12:00 noon
☑️Submit nominations to [email protected]

This week we are exploring the various ways SCOUTS South Africa members can recognise their Adult Leaders with a formal Award. Two important categories within the SCOUTS SA Awards Programme are Service Awards and Merit Awards. ⚜💜🏅🙏

✨⚜ Service Awards recognise an Adult volunteer's individual years of verified service to Scouting. This can include qualifying service before becoming a uniformed Scouter, such as committee or Parent Helper service, provided it can be verified.

✨⚜ Merit Awards recognise Adult volunteers who have consistently exceeded expectations, demonstrated exceptional commitment or dedication and made a significant contribution above and beyond their role.

💜⚜👍The distinction is important. Service recognises the journey of their contribution. Merit recognises exceptional contribution along that journey. Both forms of recognition play an important role in valuing volunteers and strengthening a culture of service. Both matter. Both deserve to be celebrated.

This week we have been talking about ways to recognise our incredible Adult volunteers for their service to the skills development and empowerment of youth through Scouting. Today we're looking at Commendations, which are different from Service Awards.💜⚜🌍

✨⚜ A Regional Commissioner's Commendation can recognise a specific, short-term intervention in response to a particular need, like for example assistance during a fire, flood or other significant situation within the Region.

✨⚜ A Chief Scout's Commendation recognises outstanding service to the Movement, the public or a community where that service is of national or exceptional significance.

So, what do they have in common? They recognise people who in the moment steps up, go beyond expectations and make a significant difference. 🙏🙏

This Women’s Month we are asking women how Scouting empowers them to be changemakers in their communities. 🇿🇦⚜🙏 SCOUTS SA content creator Caroline Boshoff spoke to Angolan Scouter Arminda Helena E de Mario Calupeteca about what Scouting means to her and how as a volunteer she can carry its values into her community.🌍⚜💜

“I first want to thank God for our lives and Scouting. Being a Scout makes a big difference in our behaviour. It really is different, as we are in different places. Scouting differentiates us as a good woman or a good person according to the ideas and the Laws of Scouting. 💜⚜💪 As a woman carrying these Laws in my life, I have the opportunity to go out in my commu nity in Angola to make a difference and show what we do in Scouting.”
