🚫🌼 Alien Invader Alert: Tecoma stans (Yellow Bells)

Currently flowering in Amanzimtoti.
This bright yellow flowering shrub is a Category 1b invasive plant in South Africa. 🌍 It spreads rapidly, forms dense thickets, and chokes out our indigenous vegetation.

❌ Don’t plant it in your garden.
🌱 Remove it responsibly and replace it with indigenous beauties like Cape Honeysuckle or Weeping Sage that support local biodiversity.

Together, we can stop the spread of invasive species and protect South Africa’s natural heritage. 💚

🌼 Meet the Invader: Montanoa hibiscifolia (Tree Daisy)

Pretty? Yes. Problematic? Absolutely.
This fast-growing invasive shrub might look like a daisy dream, but it quickly takes over forest edges, disturbed areas, and roadsides smothering our indigenous flora and reducing biodiversity.

🌬️ Spreading thousands of seeds on the wind, this alien invader is a serious threat to South Africa’s ecosystems and is officially classified as a Category 1b invader under NEMBA.

🧤 What can you do?

Learn to spot it
Remove it roots and all
Never compost it. Bag securely and dispose responsibly

Replant with beautiful, indigenous alternatives like Wild Dagga or Cape May 🌿

Let’s keep our local landscapes thriving by saying NO to invasive plants 💚

🌿 Friends, Foes & Future Guardians! 🌿

One of our members, Cara, recently hosted a talk with 3 schools on Friends and Foes, chatting to the kids about some of our biggest plant problems, like Lantana, and bringing along samples to show them in real life!

Cara also got to learn from the kids, who proudly shared what they knew about the medicinal uses of indigenous plants; a beautiful reminder that conservation is a two-way conversation 🌱

We’re so proud to see our young generation asking thoughtful questions, getting curious, and hopefully keeping an eye out in their neighbourhoods.

💚 Thank you, Cara, for helping grow the next wave of eco-warriors!

🌿 Alien Invasive Alert: Canna indica 🌿
Also known as Indian shot, canna lily, or bandera plant

It may look beautiful with its bold leaves and vibrant blooms, but Canna indica is no friend to our local ecosystems.

Originally from tropical America, this garden escapee is now listed as a Category 1b invasive species in South Africa under NEMBA. That means it's illegal to plant, propagate, or trade. It needs to be removed and controlled.

💥 Why is it a problem?
This hardy plant invades wetlands, riverbanks, and forest margins, pushing out our indigenous plants, reducing biodiversity, and disrupting natural water systems.

🛑 How does it spread?
Canna indica spreads aggressively via underground rhizomes and seeds, quickly forming dense stands that are incredibly difficult to remove once established.

🌱 What can you do?

✔ Learn to identify Canna indica in your garden or community
✔ Remove and destroy the plants responsibly (including root systems!)
✔ Replant with water-loving indigenous alternatives like Crinum macowanii (river lily) or Kniphofia species (red hot pokers)

Let’s protect the natural beauty of South Africa by giving space back to our indigenous flora 💚

Join the movement. Uproot the invaders. Plant local.
