Some people enter a child’s life quietly.

A social worker who answers the phone.
A teacher who notices something is wrong.
A foster parent who makes room for one more.
A volunteer who remembers their name.
Someone who simply chooses to care.

They may never realise how important that moment was.
But to a child who needed someone in their corner, it can mean everything.

Our heritage is more than where we come from. It is what we pass on. 🇿🇦

It lives in the stories children hear.
The languages they speak.
The food around the table.
The traditions they grow up with.
And the people who teach them where they belong.

South Africa's children may come from many different homes, cultures and communities, but every one of them deserves the opportunity to grow up proud of who they are and hopeful about who they can become.

This Heritage Day, we celebrate the beautiful differences that make us South African, and the children who will carry those stories forward.

Not every result fits into a report.

We can measure how many words a child reads in a minute.
We can measure how much they've improved.

But how do you measure the impact of the first time a child puts their hand up because they're finally confident enough to try?

That is another change being seen in the children supported through the Missio Dei Education Gr3 Reading Program.
As their reading improves, so does something else.
Their confidence.

For a child who has spent months believing, “I can't do this,” discovering that they actually can is about so much more than reading.

Sometimes learning a new word changes a sentence. Sometimes it begins changing the way a child sees themselves.
Sometimes believing in yourself starts with someone else believing in you first.

5 words per minute. Then 20.

On paper, that is a number.
To a child, it can mean something completely different.

It can mean getting through a sentence they once struggled to read.
Putting up their hand with a little more confidence.
Beginning to understand instead of simply trying to decode every word.

At Olievenhoutbosch, Grade 3 learners increased their average reading fluency from 5.1 to 20.46 words per minute during the first semester of 2026.

And they are not alone.
Nearly 280 learners are being supported through the program.

There is still work ahead. But this is what progress looks like. One word. One sentence. One child at a time. 💛

Story of hope - CMR Gauteng Oos

Some stories of hope are built on one phone call, one document and one kilometer at a time.

Lizzie’s journey did not change overnight.
It took a social worker who kept searching when her biological parents could no longer be traced. Who traveled to another province to find the documents needed to register her birth. Who kept looking when three possible foster placements did not work out.

More than a year passed.
Still, someone kept showing up.

Then came the family who would change everything.

They visited Lizzie every day while they waited for the legal process to be completed. And in June 2026, the court order finally came.

Lizzie went home.

Child protection is often made up of hundreds of moments nobody sees. But for one child, those moments can change an ENTIRE FUTURE.

Life did not unfold the way anyone imagined it would for Mia, Hannah and Joshua.

Although they came from different biological families, the three children were adopted together while they were still young. They found a home, parents who loved them and the stability every child deserves.

Then the map began to change.

Mia, the eldest, was carrying emotions she could not always understand or express. Eventually, her pain became so overwhelming that she was placed in alternative foster care, separating her from Hannah and Joshua.

Years later, their adoptive mother passed away.

Mia, now a young adult, returned home to help their adoptive father care for the younger children. The family was grieving and simply trying to get through each day. Schoolwork and routines fell behind, leaving Hannah and Joshua with significant gaps in their education.

There was hope when plans were made for the family to relocate abroad and begin again.

But before those plans could become reality, their adoptive father also passed away.

Once again, their future became uncertain.

Family friends opened their home temporarily, and eventually the family was referred to CMR Gauteng-East.

Today, Mia has returned to her studies and completed her schooling. Hannah and Joshua are living in a youth care centre, receiving the structure, educational support and guidance they need.

They are catching up. Moving forward. Finding their feet again.

Their story reminds us that hope does not always arrive as a miracle.

Sometimes hope is a safe place to stay. Another opportunity to learn. Someone who believes in you. Someone who chooses to walk beside you when the road changes.

Their story is still being written. 💛

Because when life changes the map, it does not have to end the journey. Sometimes, it simply marks the beginning of a new path.

Tshepiso was only 8 years old when she learned that the place one calls “home” could disappear overnight.

After her mother passed away, she went to live with her aunt. As she grew older, she moved in with her sister and her sister’s boyfriend. What first felt like a new beginning slowly became a home filled with conflict, violence and fear.

And that fear followed her to school.

Tshepiso had always been a bright learner. She loved science and dreamed of becoming a doctor. But carrying trauma became too heavy. Her marks dropped, her confidence disappeared, and she failed Grade 10.

Then, one Sunday evening, everything changed.

After returning from a school leadership camp, Tshepiso was told to leave the house. Frightened and with nowhere safe to go, she called her social worker.

Although it was late on a Sunday, her social worker came.
That moment reminded Tshepiso of something she had almost forgotten.

She mattered. There was hope. Someone had listened. Someone showed up. Someone chose not to leave her alone.

Tshepiso returned to her aunt and repeated Grade 10. Slowly, she rebuilt her confidence. In 2020, she completed matric as the TOP LEARNER at her school.

With the help of another social worker, she enrolled at the University of Johannesburg. And the degree she chose? Social work.

She wanted to become the person who had once shown up for her.

In 2025, Tshepiso graduated.
Today, she works for the same organisation that once supported and protected her. Now, she is the one showing up for children carrying fear, grief and uncertainty.

Sometimes the child who once needed someone becomes the person who shows up for others. 💛
