Are auditors in South Africa’s public sector viewed as watchdogs or strategic partners?

The article in the latest Auditing SA magazine addresses the changing role of audit in South Africa’s public sector. While many people still see auditors as watchdogs, audit can play a much bigger role in helping organisations strengthen controls, manage risks, make better decisions and move beyond a “gotcha” culture.

When auditors are involved early, they can help prevent problems before they happen instead of only identifying them afterwards.

This article examines how auditors and accountants can work together to improve governance, accountability and public trust. It also highlights why audit should be seen as a partner in building stronger and more effective public institutions.

SAIGA trainees raise the bar as LGSETA commends progress and performance on the LGSETA Candidacy programme.

SAIGA continues to set the benchmark for trainee development, with Azania Chartered Accountants currently hosting 12 of its trainees, the highest number of trainees across all training firms.

The success of the programme was evident during a recent site visit by SAIGA as well as monitoring by LGSETA representative Stephen Lekhema, who engaged with trainees and assessed their progress. The visit confirmed that trainees are receiving the guidance and support needed to grow in the profession.

Azania Managing Director, Peter Serite and Trainee Manager Lebogang Mokoena praised the trainees for their outstanding performance, noting that some have developed strong skills and are now able to manage client projects with little supervision. " I am very happy with all our trainees, they are doing so well in their programme and reporting on time". Said Mokoena.

The visit also highlighted the strong partnership between the organisation and their shared commitment to developing future auditing professionals. All parties expressed appreciation for the collaboration, which continues to provide trainees with valuable workplace experience and practical skills.

We are proud to welcome Executive Mayor John Mpe of Polokwane Local Municipality as a speaker at the 3rd Annual SAIGA Local Government Summit.

Since taking office in 2021, Mayor Mpe has led Polokwane to achieve three consecutive unqualified audit opinions and two clean audits, showing his commitment to good governance and service delivery for nearly 1.3 million residents.

With more than 20 years of experience in banking, local government and public sector governance, he brings valuable knowledge and leadership insights to the Summit.
