History has been made in South Africa! 🇿🇦

The Cape Town Ulama Board (CTUB) proudly hosted the first-ever International Sufi Conference in Cape Town on Saturday, 16 May 2026. This groundbreaking milestone brought together an exceptional turnout of dedicated delegates, local community leaders, and a distinguished collective of both local Ulama and renowned international guest scholars.

In a world facing immense fragmentation and systemic crises, the conference served as a vital platform to re-anchor a critical truth: Tasawwuf is not alien or separate from Islam—it is Islam. It is the living science of Ihsan (spiritual excellence) and inner purification.

Throughout the day, the core of our scholarly lectures and panel discussions focused intensely on:

Purification (Tazkiyah)

Uprightness (Istiqaamah)

Inner Peace & Spiritual Growth

Spiritual Training (Tarbiyah) & Closeness to Allah

In essence, the convention made it clear that these internal spiritual disciplines are explicitly designed to cultivate the moral stamina and clarity required to stand firmly against global injustices, including the devastating realities unfolding in Palestine. Far from being a passive retreat, true Tasawwuf is the ultimate path to true justice and peace.

The 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘜𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘢 𝘉𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 (𝘊𝘛𝘜𝘉) is proud to announce a significant escalation in its commitment to public safety with the appointment of renowned veteran anti-gang officer, Colonel Dawood Laing, as the head of the CTUB Community Guardianship Desk.

This innovative "synergy desk" represents a strategic bridge between professional law enforcement expertise and the moral authority of religious leadership. By combining the technical precision of seasoned retired officers with the guidance of the Ulama, the CTUB is creating a unified front to tackle the persistent scourge of gangsterism, drugs, and violent crime that has plagued the Cape Flats.

This initiative was introduced at a high-level Crime Response Meeting hosted by the CTUB, which convened a broad coalition of stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, civic leaders, the South African Police Service (SAPS), municipal law enforcement, and various community safety authorities. This meeting was the first of several planned consultative sittings designed to build a comprehensive and united strategy. In the coming weeks, the CTUB will expand these engagements to include direct sessions with the public, Western Cape Safety and Security leadership, and other key role-players.

Our streets have increasingly become battlefields, and we refuse to watch from the sidelines. It is recognized that the SAPS and existing community structures need robust support to effect real change. As religious leaders, the CTUB is stepping into this space to assist, provide expertise, and ensure that safety efforts are grounded in both legal reality and moral imperative.

The Community Guardianship Desk will focus on long-term, sustainable solutions to reclaim our communities. By marrying the tactical experience of veteran officers with the trust and reach of the Ulama, the CTUB is establishing a new standard for accountability and safety. We remain committed to working alongside all authorities and the public to ensure that justice is not only demanded but effectively delivered for the residents of Cape Town.
