Generations of Activism: Tshisimani 10-Year Exhibition

This year marks 50 years since the June 16 Uprisings, when young people helped change the course of South African history through collective action and resistance. It is also the 10-year anniversary of the Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education, which has spent the past decade working alongside grassroots movements, activists, and communities across South Africa and the continent.

Generations of Activism asks: What connects the struggles of youth of 1976 to the struggles of today, and how does it reflect in the last decade of activism?

Through an exhibition of our partners photography, videos, and stories, alongside an intergenerational panel featuring activists from every decade since 1976, the event reflects on the continuity of struggle across generations — from June 16 to today’s movements for housing, land, education, solidarity, water and justice.

Join us as we celebrate 50 years of youth activism, 10 years of Tshisimani, and the enduring power of collective action.

From 29-30 May, 2026 ILRIG hosted the Building Women’s Power Political School at Schoenstatt Retreat in Constantia. 30 women of all ages gathered to share their experiences with community organising and discuss concepts of feminism, intersectionality, and patriarchy. Programming focused on building women’s power within movements. Throughout the activities, women were assigned to groups to discuss their own experiences, their understanding of feminism, women’s involvement in social movements and their organisations. In addition, the groups had time to create videos on women’s experiences organising. These videos exemplified participant’s creativity, innovation and ingenuity. The day ended with a healing circle facilitated by the Healthcare Workers Forum which provided a safe space for women to openly share their experiences. Throughout the events, participants learned about the socioeconomic and political history of South Africa which provided context for discussions of patriarchy and feminism. They shared their lived experiences of working and organising in their communities. These women also explored different types of feminist movements and structures.
