The 2026 Cohort of Human Rights Peer Educators has successfully concluded their first training under the Human Rights for Social Cohesion Programme, held at the Human Rights School in Malmesbury, Western Cape, South Africa.

This milestone marks the beginning of a powerful journey. The cohort now carries the responsibility of advancing a culture grounded in human rights, dignity, and mutual respect within their communities and across the region.

Representing Namibia, Tanzania, and Mozambique, these peer educators embody a growing movement committed to strengthening social cohesion, fostering understanding, and promoting inclusive, people-centred development across Africa.

We proudly welcome these members into the African Youth Assembly (AYA) and look forward to the next two days of learning exchange and shared experience, where the focus will be on practical, on-the-job application of building human rights communities.

As they transition from learning to action, their role becomes vital in shaping communities that are informed, engaged, and united in the values of human rights.

Kamogelo Modisane (she/her) Johannesburg, South Africa.

Kamogelo is an academic and researcher specialising in migration, displacement in the SADC region. She holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences (triple major) from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and an Honours degree in Migration and Displacement at the African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).

Kamogelo is an alumni of the Reach Alliance International Fellowship, where her research examined indigenous self-determination among migrant women living in Cape Town, South Africa, with a particular focus on the role of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in addressing migration challenges. Her work centres on migration governance, agency and the potential of locally grounded, community-driven frameworks to respond to displacement in more contextually relevant ways.

Kamo also serves as a rapporteur for the Southern Africa Migration Network (SAMIN), where she produces analytical reports from conferences, policy dialogues and migration-related engagements. Through her academic and policy work, she seeks to contribute to more responsive migration governance systems across the region, with a long-term aspiration to work in diplomacy and public policy within the domain of migration and home affairs.

Thank you Kamogelo for being a part of the African youth assembly.
