Getting Reading Right: Grade 3 Fluency

Our Wednesday Afternoon Teacher Training at the Jolly Literacy Hub in Metro South, Mitchells Plain was all about our incredible Grade 3 teachers! 📚❤️

With just 6 weeks remaining in the term, our focus was: How do we build fluency and automaticity in reading?

The answer from our teachers today was simple and powerful: consistency and abundant practice. 👏🏽

Creating fluent readers takes time, intentional teaching, repeated practice and lots of opportunities to read. Every day matters.

We are incredibly proud of the growth, commitment and willingness of our teachers to unlearn, relearn and strengthen their practice so that every child has the opportunity to become a confident reader.

Can children with intellectual impairments learn to read?

Absolutely! ❤️📚

Yes, children with intellectual impairments can learn to read. While they may experience cognitive and language challenges, research shows that many can develop decoding, word recognition and functional literacy skills when provided with explicit, systematic instruction that is adapted to their individual strengths and needs.

This is why our work as teachers matters so much.

On Monday, we had the privilege of training the amazing staff at Cafda School of Skills in Cape Town, where we explored the Science of Reading and how Jolly Phonics can support the development of foundational literacy skills.

It reminded us of something incredibly important: we must never underestimate what our learners are capable of achieving.

They need us to believe in them.
They need us to understand how they learn.
And they need us to have the right knowledge, tools and strategies to teach them.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn to read. Every child deserves a teacher who believes it is possible. 🌟

Thank you to the Cafda team for an inspiring and meaningful training session.

What a Jolly good day! 🎉📚🇿🇦💛🙏

Today, 26 of our accredited Jolly Phonics Trainers from the Western Cape, Free State and Eastern Cape travelled to Gauteng Province with one shared purpose - to get reading right!

Together, our incredible training team reached over 2,000 Grade 1 teachers across 6 districts in Gauteng, equipping teachers with practical, evidence-informed Jolly Phonics strategies to support every child on their journey to becoming an independent, confident and fluent reader. 📖✨👩‍🏫🇿🇦

Today, teachers unpacked the 8 Steps for teaching letter sounds and the 5 Skills that form the foundation of strong reading and spelling:

🔤 Learning the letter sounds
👂 Learning letter formation
🧩 Blending for reading
📖 Segmenting (sounding) for spelling
📝 Tricky Words

Because learning to read is not about guessing. It is about giving children the right skills, the right teaching and the right foundations - from the very beginning.

Today was about building teacher capacity, strengthening literacy instruction and changing reading outcomes - one teacher, one classroom and one child at a time. ❤️

A heartfelt thank you to our phenomenal Jolly Phonics training team for travelling across provinces and sharing your knowledge, passion and commitment. 💛

Thank you also to the dedicated officials from the Gauteng Department of Education and, most importantly, to every Foundation Phase teacher who showed up, engaged, learned, participated and committed themselves to getting reading right for their learners.

Our goal is simple: GETTING READING RIGHT IN EVERY PROVINCE, FOR EVERY CHILD!

Getting Reading Right at Woodville Primary 📚🇿🇦💛🙏

Yesterday, we had the privilege of visiting Woodville Primary School in Metro South, Mitchells Plain, and spending time in some of their Grade 1, 2 and 3 classrooms.

What an incredible experience! 🙌🏽 Hearing learners sound out, blend and read words, watching them practise their word-reading fluency and sound reviews, and seeing them engage in dictation in their books was truly encouraging.

These moments remind us that reading and writing don't happen by chance - they are taught explicitly, systematically and consistently.

When teachers provide learners with abundant opportunities to practise, apply their phonics knowledge, read words and write what they hear, we are building strong foundations for literacy. ❤️📖✏️

Today we had the privilege of hosting a powerful session with our Departmental Heads.

It was a space for honest, real, and sometimes difficult conversations about the challenges we face in our schools. But more importantly, it was about shifting our focus from the obstacles to the solutions - because that's what true leaders do.

As Departmental Heads, we are more than managers. We are instructional leaders, mentors, coaches, and the driving force behind the growth of our teachers. The way we lead shapes classroom practice, influences teacher confidence, and ultimately impacts every child sitting in our classrooms. 🎉👩‍🏫📚🇿🇦💛🙏
