Magic 'e' - One of the many important spelling rules that learners need to know and understand. Spelling rules are essential in helping children become confident readers and writers.

The Magic 'e' rule is when an 'e' at the end of a word makes the vowel say its name (long vowel sound).

The 'e' is silent, but it has the magic power to change the vowel sound in the word.

Examples:

cap β†’ cape

kit β†’ kite

hop β†’ hope

tub β†’ tube

mad β†’ made

Without the e, the vowel says its short sound:

a = /a/ as in cap

i = /i/ as in kit

o = /o/ as in hop

When the magic e is added, the vowel says its name:

a = /ay/ as in cape

i = /igh/ as in kite

o = /oa/ as in hope

A learner-friendly way to explain it is:

"Magic 'e' is a silent e at the end of a word. It makes the vowel jump over the consonant and say its name." ✨

This spelling rule is important because it helps learners read and spell many common words accurately and fluently. πŸ“š

Here are some adorable learners from Mpumalanga Province demonstrating their understanding of the Magic 'e' rule. Moments like these remind us why explicit and systematic literacy instruction is so important.

Getting reading right for every child, one sound, one word, and one learner at a time. πŸ“šβœ¨

Yesterday, we had the privilege of addressing fourth-year Foundation Phase students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, providing them with an orientation to Jolly Phonics and the importance of high-quality literacy instruction.

As these future teachers prepare to enter the profession, it is encouraging to see their passion, curiosity, and willingness to learn about evidence-based approaches to literacy. Investing in teacher knowledge and practice remains one of the most powerful ways to improve learner outcomes.

A sincere thank you to Dr. C Forbes and the students for the warm welcome and active participation. We look forward to seeing the impact these future educators will have in their classrooms and communities.

Together, we can get reading right. πŸ“šβœ¨

This past Saturday at West End Primary School, we had the privilege of bringing together Grade 2 and Grade 3 teachers to explore what effective Jolly Phonics implementation looks like beyond Grade 1. We focused on refining classroom practice through the implementation of the 6 Core Fluency Skills, ensuring that learners continue to build strong reading foundations as they progress through the grades.

When teachers are willing to learn, grow, and embrace change, they have the power to transform the narrative for countless children.

This is just the beginning.

Today we had the privilege of visiting Merrydale Primary School in Metro South, Mitchells Plain. πŸ“šβœ¨

It was encouraging to see teachers intentionally strengthening reading and writing by focusing on the core skills needed to help every child succeed.
