Today marks the beginning of the next chapter of the Salt River Market site following a significant milestone with the site handover from the City of Cape Town to Communicare.

Stakeholders have been working collaboratively for a number of years to get to this point, united by a shared vision to unlock the site’s potential and create lasting impact.

Potential becomes progress and today that progress is visible. The project will see the development of both social and affordable rental housing units.

Planned with people in mind, this development reflects Communicare’s commitment to building inclusive sustainable communities where individuals and families can thrive. It’s more than a project it’s a step towards stronger and more connected neighbourhoods.

This past Saturday, children from Communicare properties took to the stage at the Vulamathuba showcase to present the dance and self-defence skills they have been developing over time. The showcase was a reflection of their hard work, discipline and growing confidence, as they expressed themselves through movement and demonstrated important life skills.

Made possible through meaningful partnerships with Jazzart Dance Theatre and the YMCA, programmes like these continue to provide young people with opportunities to learn, grow and thrive. By nurturing creativity, resilience and self-belief, Vulamathuba is helping to build stronger, more confident individuals within our communities.

Vulamathuba's Matric Programme is designed with the adult learner in mind, meeting their work, family and education commitments. It offers learners a simplified and flexible curriculum that can be completed within one year, with a maximum of six subjects. The curriculum follows a hybrid model, with in‑person classes on Saturdays at the Vulamathuba Community Learning Centre in Brooklyn, and online sessions during the week.
