Tshisimani - Centre for Activist Education

Tshisimani - Centre for Activist Education Supporting activists in their work for social, economic and ecological justice. What is the Tshisimani Centre? What does the Tshisimani Centre do?

The Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education draws its name ‘Tshisimani’ from a word in the TshiVenda language meaning fountain, spring or ‘at the water source'. This captures the driving inspiration for the Centre, which is to nourish, replenish and sustain the power and capacity of activist movements, organisations and networks engaged in grassroots struggle to build a just society in South Afri

ca and internationally. Formed in early 2016, the Tshisimani Centre provides structured and reflective learning programmes for social justice activists to complement their experience in fundamentally addressing, and finding solutions to, the injustices faced daily by the poor, marginalised and disenfranchised. Building our courses in conversation with activists, we question the ways in which intersections of class, race and gender, give rise to massive and exploitative differentials in wealth, power, privilege and opportunity. We are committed to building a unique and inclusive space for combining specialist expertise of leading intellectuals with the knowledge and skills gained by activists in struggle on the streets and in communities. Located in South Africa and oriented towards struggles in Africa and elsewhere, the Tshisimani Centre is focused on developing an understanding of inequality and injustice, and a vision for change, that is global in scope. The Centre was initiated and is generously funded by the Bertha Foundation and is part of an international network of legal, media, environmental and social justice initiatives supported by Bertha. The Tshisimani Centre hosts regular public seminars, lecture series, and documentary screenings on questions of politics, current affairs, history and theory that are of critical concern to activists. These offerings will increasingly be made available online. The Tshisimani Centre also offers dedicated short intensive courses of between two and four days as well as longer residential retreats. All programmes seek to deepen debate and enhance understanding of the world we live in, enabling activists to engage with a range of theoretical issues and topics of contemporary significance locally and internationally. Issues such as how inequality and poverty arise; lessons from struggles of the past and present, in South Africa and globally; understanding major global events such as wars, revolutions, mass migrations, religious fundamentalism, and economic crises; different currents of Marxism; anarchism; liberalism; nationalism; black consciousness; Pan-Africanism; African history, political thought and traditions; feminism and liberation from sexual and gender-based oppression; and how these shape different approaches to political programme development and social change. Theoretical insights are combined with a practical engagement with how to build activist organisations, how to campaign imaginatively, how to build a programme, how to use various media and how to engage creatively and robustly in public debate. Our offerings involve a creative blend of reading, reflection, and discussion, combining theoretical ideas and arguments with practical knowledge. Target groups include activists campaigning for urban land justice, improved access to safety and sanitation; and quality public education, as well as legal activists, rural activists, investigative journalists and those using social media for social change. The Centre will also convene international gatherings where activists from different countries can connect with one another, build relationships, share approaches and lessons learnt from different contexts. The Centre is accountable to an independent Board and currently employs nine full-time staff.

Generations of Activism: Tshisimani 10-Year Exhibition

This year marks 50 years since the June 16 Uprisings, when young people helped change the course of South African history through collective action and resistance. It is also the 10-year anniversary of the Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education, which has spent the past decade working alongside grassroots movements, activists, and communities across South Africa and the continent.

Generations of Activism asks: What connects the struggles of youth of 1976 to the struggles of today, and how does it reflect in the last decade of activism?

Through an exhibition of our partners photography, videos, and stories, alongside an intergenerational panel featuring activists from every decade since 1976, the event reflects on the continuity of struggle across generations — from June 16 to today’s movements for housing, land, education, solidarity, water and justice.

Join us as we celebrate 50 years of youth activism, 10 years of Tshisimani, and the enduring power of collective action.

STATEMENT, Thursday 21 May 2026:

March and March wants to bring its politics of fear and chaos to Cape Town this
Saturday, with a march from Belville to Parow.

We, the undersigned residents, workers, organisations, migrants, refugees, activists, faith communities, students, and community members of Cape Town, reject them completely.

We stand with migrants, refugees, undocumented people, and all those targeted by xenophobic
politics. We stand for solidarity across borders and against every attempt to turn vulnerable people into enemies.

We call on the police, public officials, and the media to act responsibly to prevent intimidation and xenophobic violence.

The South African Constitution protects the dignity and safety of everyone who lives in this country, and South Africa’s international obligations require the
protection of refugees and migrants alike.

The rest of Africa is watching.

Tshisimani is turning 10!

This June, Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education will host a public exhibition marking 10 years of struggles, organising, resistance, and movement-building across South Africa and the continent.

The exhibition will bring together contemporary movement photographs and videos alongside historical archive materials — including images from the 1976 student uprisings — tracing the continuity of resistance across generations.
We’re inviting alumni, partner movements, organisations, and activists to contribute photographs and short videos from protests, campaigns, community organising, and everyday movement work.

📅 Submission deadline: 29 May 2026

It is with great sadness we’ve learned of, and now share with our alumni who met her, the passing of a dear comrade, Muzan Alneel.

Muzan was an activist, author, revolutionary and educator who joined Tshisimani in 2019 to cohold our RethinkingFreedom course. She and comrade Walaa Salah shared with young activists her reflections and lessons from the Sudanese revolution.

She continued to fight for dignity, life and emancipation long after our encounter together and leaves a lasting legacy of the indomitable fire of youth and courage in the face of injustice.

Rest well comrade, and thank you for sharing your flame with us and so many others.

Last week we completed module two of our final paralegal training programme: “Freedom Under Fire”.

This course was a culmination of 4 years running social justice education for community-based paralegals with the intention of cultivating grassroots activism in a sector facing increasing corporatisation.

Our final module focused on real-life case studies in water justice, land occupations and the recent paternity leave ruling at ConCourt. Each case study was used to analyse how activists develop and maintain campaigns - in turn providing different frameworks for developing their own campaigns.

We shared each day with a on the ground specialist to engage us with nuances of each campaign: Dr Ferrial Adams of the WaterCAN, author and organic intellectual Molaodi Wa Sekake and Mpiwa Mangwiro-Tsanga of Sonke Gender Justice.

We congratulate this year’s participants for their extensive commitment, care, creativity and fun they brought into our time together. And we look forward to the solidarity and experience they take back into their communities.
