Yesterday, Skål International Cape Town President Johan Van Schalkwyk had the honour of saying a few words in memory of Michael Hunter-Smith.

Michael embodied so much of what Skål stands for. He was a true connector of people, bringing knowledge, warmth and plenty of humour into every room he entered, while creating friendships and strengthening relationships along the way.

And that is at the heart of Skål — the friendships, connections and relationships that bring our tourism industry together.

The tribute closed with the traditional Skål toast, raising a glass to honour Michael and the impact he had on so many.

May he rest in peace.

Dear Skål community,

The Cape Town memorial for Michael Hunter-Smith will take place on Thursday, 20 August at 14:00 at Blowfish Restaurant, Dolphin Beach Hotel.

The celebration will honour Michael’s life, his contribution to the community, and the many friendships and connections he made throughout his life and career.

The service will also be available via livestream on YouTube for those unable to attend in person.

Our thoughts are with Michael’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who knew him.

Skål International Cape Town is excited to welcome Skålleagues from around the world to our special International Friendship Braai Day in the Cape Winelands on Thursday, 24 September 2026.

To make the journey to Dekkersvlei Vineyards in Paarl more comfortable for our guests travelling from near and far, we have adjusted the event start time to 14h00.

We have made this adjustment with our guests’ comfort in mind, allowing more time for travel and ensuring everyone can arrive at the venue comfortably and enjoy the afternoon.

All other event details remain unchanged, and we look forward to welcoming Skålleagues from around the world to the Cape Winelands for an afternoon of friendship, connection and authentic South African hospitality.

What an afternoon to remember at The Annex Restaurant in Thibault Square!

Our August Networking Lunch brought together Skålleagues, members, guests and tourism professionals for an afternoon of connection, collaboration, laughter and genuine Skål friendship.

In honour of Women’s Month, we celebrated the women who continue to lead, inspire and shape our tourism industry, while reflecting on the women who paved the way and the opportunities that lie ahead for future generations.

From inspiring conversations and shared insights to new connections and plenty of laughter, the afternoon captured what Skål Cape Town is all about — Doing Business Among Friends.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this Women’s Month celebration such a special Skål Cape Town gathering.
