On Saturday, 30 May, members of the Lions Club of Tokai joined fellow Lions and Rotarians at the Baxter Theatre for the annual Cape Town Big Band Jazz festival.

This much anticipated event has become a fixture on the Lions District 410W calendar, providing Lions clubs with the opportunity to treat senior citizens from the communities they serve to a memorable day of free entertainment.

This year, the club's beneficiaries were the residents of the Douglas Murray Old Age Home, in CAFDA Village. They were treated to an enjoyable programme featuring a school band, a community band, and a Christmas band. The performances were once again of an exceptionally high standard, and the residents thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon's entertainment.

The club extends its sincere appreciation to all the club members who generously volunteered their time to chaperone the residents, ensuring that they enjoyed a comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable outing.

We also wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to Ann Barr of the Kirstenbosch Lions Club for extending the invitation to our club and for her dedication in organising this remarkable event year after year. Her commitment and hard work has made the annual Cape Town Big Band Jazz event a highlight on the Lions District 410W calendar and a cherished experience for senior citizens.

A special thank you is also conveyed to club member Lynette Davids, for thoughtfully arranging take-home snack packs for the seniors, which added an extra touch of care and kindness to the day.

Events such as these highlight the importance of community service, and creating meaningful experiences for our senior citizens, and the club is grateful to have been part of another successful Cape Town Big Band Jazz festival.

Thank you to the Constantiaberg Bulletin newspaper for once again publishing an insightful newspaper article. The article beautifully captured the Cape Herb & Spice and the Lions Club of Tokai's High Tea event, which celebrated International Tea Day with residents of the Douglas Murray Old Age Home in CAFDA Village.

I am reminded by the words of Neil Kinnock: "Newspapers are both tutors as well as informers".

The Lions Club of Tokai had a bumper weekend of marshalling duties. Our first stint was at the Peace Run on Saturday, 23 May, where club members did marshalling duties for the 5 Kilometre, 10 Kilometre, and Mountain Trail Run events. Club members then joined various other Lions clubs and volunteers on Sunday, 24 May, to marshal at the Cape Town Marathon.

Marshalling at these major Cape Town sporting events is no mean feat, and the Lions Club of Tokai has developed a rich culture of marshalling over many years. The club is regularly one of the first organisations called upon to assist with these important duties. Club members left their respective homes at the crack of dawn to report to their marshalling sectors by 05h45 on both race days, which ended at 14h00 and 16h00 respectively.

The Cape Town Marathon, which is currently in the final candidacy phase to become part of the prestigious Abbots World Marathon Majors alongside the Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Sydney Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and New York City Marathon, attracted approximately 27 000 runners from 143 countries. The event also featured 13 male and 8 female world class elite runners.

The event was a resounding success, and the Lions Club of Tokai is honoured and proud that, as a club, we could collectively contribute to the success of this world renowned marathon in a small, but significant way.

The Lions Club of Tokai embarked on an exciting new environmental project in collaboration with Urban Bee and Tutus Loco Bee Hotels in December 2025.

This initiative focuses on the study and monitoring of solitary bees within the Lower Tokai Forest, an area in which our clubhouse is ideally situated. The first Bee Hotel was installed at our clubhouse in the Lower Tokai Forest on 17 December 2025, marking the beginning of this meaningful collaboration.

In this regard, the club would also like to acknowledge and applaud Lions International for instituting World Bee Day on 20 May 2018. As a club, we are honored to be associated with an initiative that highlights the importance of bees and environmental sustainability and it can be celebrated every year on 20 May.

On Sunday, 17 May, the Lions Club of Tokai assisted with a feeding project in Westlake Village. This initiative arose in response to the inclement weather experienced across Cape Town during the past week.

The severe storm that swept across Cape Town left many families in Westlake Village distressed and facing extremely difficult circumstances, particularly those whose homes sustained damage during the storm.

The objective of the project was to provide the affected community with a warm and nourishing meal during this challenging time. The Lions Club of Tokai donated all the food items required for the cooked meals.

The club would like to extend its gratitude to Lion Ian Grove for purchasing and delivering the food items and to Lion Christiane Beretta-Savoia who was able to join and support the project on the day.
