Last week we visited maybe the most beautiful part of the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini. The nature reserve of which the mountain range is a part is the Piano Grande. This ‘great plain’ lies no less than 1,450 meters above sea level, close to the town of Norcia. In late spring, the plain forms one large impressionistic painting, with swirling brushstrokes of red, blue, yellow, white, and purple.

This mosaic of colors is thanks to the flowering lentils, for which the plateau is known. But also to the deep red poppies, sky-blue cornflowers, golden-yellow mustard seeds, chamomile, purple mirror bells, and many other wildflowers that bloom from mid-May to mid-July.

Great MGS Italy branch outing to Castelluccio Piano Grande last Wednesday! Led by the excellent guide Emanuele Persiani (FaccioTardi.it Escursioni) we traversed the plain learning all about the centuries-old lentil cultivation and were able to enjoy the wonderful mosaic of colour that flower display that it produces.

After ‘un buon caffè ‘ we headed toward Villa Rezzola - a beautiful recently restored FAI property with stunning views on Lerici and an English inspired garden. An impact full start of our Ligurian trip for sure.

Our trip to Liguria also included a visit to a wonderful garden in the hills above La Spezia. Manuela and Paolo have amassed an amazing collection of dry garden plants. Salvias predominate with many varieties, both more common and very unusual, but also a myriad of cistus, phlomis, santolina and helichrysum (including helichrysum lambertianum)
