NATIONAL CUPCAKE DAY
De Grendel Lions Club participated in National Cupcake Day with the aim to raise awareness regarding childhood cancer. However the club decided not to sell it, but rather donate it to a local safehouse for children. They were over the moon with the donation and very appreciative. Added to the donation of cupcakes was also a donation of small clothes for one of the children currently living there. She also gave her stamp of approval after browsing through it.

3 members from De Grendel Lions club were requested by the head librarian of Bothasig library to host a Friends of the Library social session. This included a bingo game hosted by the Lions. Various prizes were won and great fellowship had by all. Being asked to host the event shows that the club is being more engaged by the local community. Childhood Cancer
Members from De Grendel Lions club recently availed their time to assist as marshals at the the Rohan Bloom 245 Trail Run at De Grendel Farm. They partnered with Milnerton Lions Club, Tygerberg Hills Lions Club and Table View Lions Club, where members worked as voluntary marshals and refreshment station managers. All funds raised from entry fees will therefore be available for the foundation to utilize. The Rohan Bloom Foundation's goal is to provide an environment that offers families of children suffering with cancer with the support they need. While serving, members will always find time to have fun!

On 25 August 2026 De Grendel Lions Club had the privilege of hosting 25 local Seniors at our monthly senior event. Under the guidance of the host, Lion Mieke, they enjoyed the Beetle Drive game tremendously. On hand to ensure that our guests stay dehydrated and nourished, members from our club, and Cape Town Lions president, served them with snacks and hot beverages. World Humanitarian Day 19 August 2026
De Grendel Lions club participated today by reaching out to a cancer patient in a local hospital. Information was relayed to De Grendel Lions which originated from George relating to a young adult receiving treatment and in need of assistance. The mother of the patient was contacted to see how De Grendel could assist. As a result of the information received from the mother, a hospital visit was conducted and time spent with the patient. As they say in the ads, that was not all... She was presented with a goodie bag containing some edibles and sustenance drinks, her own Nemo fish, a warm McDonalds meal, and a handwritten motivational note from the club. It was a short visit which was ended with a little smile
from our patient.

BLISTERS FOR BREAD FUNWALK
On 16 August 2026 members from De Grendel Lions Club and Friends of De Grendel Lions Club assisted at the annual Blisters for Bread fun walk as marshals to ensure the safety of the 10km fun walk participants. As on the photographs, great fun was had by everyone who participated! What a privilege to attend and assist. Even the cool temperature could not dampen the great spirit shown by our group! Cannot wait for next year.

At the De Grendel Lions general business meeting on 8 August 2026 Lion President Jacques Mostert surprised al the women attending with a beautiful rose to express all the male member's gratitude for the role they play in our lives, and also as Lions, in other peoples lives as well! De Grendel Lions celebrates Mandela Day
On 17 July 2026 members from De Grendel Lions Club surprised the children and staff of the Sunshine Corner Playschool and Daycare crèche in Bothasig with a visit to celebrate Mandela Day.

Members of De Grendel Lions did not arrive empty handed as they brought something nice for lunch. The intrepid members, supported by crèche staff, proceeded to treat the the children with freshly prepared hotdogs and cool drinks. The surprise lunch was rounded off by scrumptious cupcakes for dessert. The smiles on the faces of the children and staff indicated that they were very happy and pleasantly surprised. The Lions Club members were also in good spirits as they thouroughly enjoyed the more than 67 minutes spent at the crèche.
De Grendel Lions were not alone as they had teamed up with another community partner. Samantha Manel and Chelsey de Jager, members from Edgemead Library attended the event as well. While the arrangements in the kitchen took place, they took the opportunity to read stories to the mesmerized children listening attentively. The greatest vote of thanks however came from the smiles and hugs of the children who totally enjoyed the surprise.
