Your phone number is the key to your bank account. A criminal in Sea Point can steal that key without ever touching your phone.

Two scams are quietly draining accounts on this coastline right now — card skimming at restaurants, petrol stations and small retailers along Main Road, Regent Road and the Promenade, and SIM-swap fraud, where a stranger convinces your network to move your number to their SIM and watches every OTP land in their hand instead of yours.

Both have a defence. Both take less than a minute.
Card skimming — never let your card leave your sight. Ask for the machine at your table. Cover the keypad.
SIM-swap — one phone call to Vodacom, MTN, Cell C or Telkom to switch on SIM-swap protection. Most Sea Point residents have not made it.

If something feels wrong, report it.

🛑 Two scams hitting Sea Point right now - both preventable in under a minute.

Card skimming at restaurants, petrol stations, and small retailers is back in circulation. The defence is simple:

✔ Never let your card leave your sight - ask for the machine at the table.
✔ Cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
✔ Switch on real time transaction notifications in your banking app.
✔ If a transaction looks wrong, freeze the card immediately in the app, then call your bank's fraud line.

SIM-swap fraud is the bigger threat. Criminals port your number to a new SIM, intercept your OTPs, and clear your accounts before you've noticed your phone has lost signal.

Three things to do today:
✔ Activate SIM-swap / port-out protection with your mobile provider (Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Telkom - all offer it; most residents haven't switched it on).
✔ Move to in-app authentication instead of SMS OTPs where your bank allows.
✔ If your phone unexpectedly loses signal — especially overnight — treat it as a security incident.

Phone your bank from another device and freeze your accounts immediately.

Friday night on the Sea Point Promenade - a joint operation led by Lt Col Pentz, Sea Point SAPS Station Commander, with Cape Town Law Enforcement, Green Point Neighbourhood Watch and your Sea Point CPF.

Eight officers briefed by Lt Col Pentz himself. Vehicle searches and compliance checks across the afternoon. A full roadblock on Helen Suzman Boulevard into the night. 200 gender-based violence pamphlets handed directly to motorists by Amanda Hattingh from the CPF. Arrests made where the law required them - every one of them by the book.

The clip in the middle is a Sea Point resident speaking unscripted about what the CPF means to her. We'll let her words carry the message.

The thieves aren't picking your locks. They're pressing a button.

Remote jamming has quietly become one of Sea Point's most underestimated crimes. One press blocks your key fob. Your car looks locked. It isn't. Whatever is inside - phone, laptop, handbag, the shopping you just put in the boot - walks away.

The prevention is a two-second habit. Watch.

The Sea Point CPF is aware of the active community discussion around e-bikes and e-scooters on the Promenade. The matter was raised at our General Meeting on 14 May 2026 and we take the underlying safety concerns seriously.

Promenade safety sits across several agencies — the City of Cape Town (Law Enforcement, Traffic Services, and Parks & Recreation), SAPS, the Sea Point CID, and the rental operators themselves. The CPF's role is to convene these parties and to give the community a structured voice. In the coming weeks the CPF will be engaging the Ward Councillor's office, SAPS, City Law Enforcement and Traffic Services, the Sea Point CID, and the principal rental operators on the Promenade with a view to agreeing a clear joint working position.
Promenade e-mobility safety will be a standing item at the next CPF Sector Forum and General Meeting.

Residents who wish to contribute concerns or observations are welcome to email the CPF directly.
If you witness reckless or unsafe conduct, please report it. For criminal conduct call 10111 (or 112 from a mobile). For City matters, including Law Enforcement and Traffic, call 021 480 7700. Reports generate the data that drive deployment.
