How Much More Must We Pay? Water and Food Security.

This past weekend had the fourth session on How Much More Must We Pay: Water and Food Security.

We had a display that represented what is on our plates as South Africa. Each Plate represented some of our everyday challenges around water, food, electricity and healthcare. The most emerging challenges were themed: Poor water quality, increased electricity tariffs, Inflation, access to land for communal farming. The display showcased how everything on plates reflects cost of living and how climate change is connected. How our daily challenges are connected to the bigger issues like climate pressure, the economy and the decisions that are made around us.

Participates were put into groups and received different themes and discussed what issues they face and what they think influenced the issue, how it could be better communicated to communities and how communities can localise food systems and be more involved in water supply process.

Each group presented their recommendations and solutions. And how we can take collective action towards a just future!

How Much More Must We Pay? Gender, Safety and Migration.

This past weekend, we held our third session on How Much More Must We Pay: Gender, Safety and Migration.

The session began with participants moving around the venue, where recent South African news headlines on gender-based violence (GBV), safety, and migration were displayed. Participants were asked to pin the headlines onto the wall and "Bare Witness" and then use art to express the thoughts and emotions they experienced while engaging with the stories.

Through facilitated discussions, participants reflected on the current state of the country and explored practical solutions that can be implemented at the local level to improve safety within our communities.

The ideas and recommendations that emerged from these group discussions were then used to inform letters addressed to relevant stakeholders, calling for action and accountability on issues of gender, safety, and migration.

Over the past weekend, we had an in person workshop, Stories and Songs of Resilience, creating space for intergenerational connections through storytelling, creativity and movement.

We reflected on the stories that have shaped us and then used different art forms, from poetry and songs to drama and creative expression, to tell our own stories of resilience.

Together, we honoured where we come from while inspiring the stories we want to carry forward.

Today, we held our first session of the How Much More Must We Pay series: Energy & Electricity. ⚡

The session started by looking at where South Africa currently stands in the energy sector, including recent updates on electricity policy, followed by a brief history of South Africa’s and its relationship with fossil fuels.

We then opened the space for our Electricity Photovoice Exhibition, which was captured by people from different communities who used photography to document their day-to-day experiences and struggles with electricity.

The photographs became a starting point for conversation, allowing participants to reflect on the images that spoke to them and share the experiences and stories behind what they saw.

The dialogue continued as many participants recognised similar experiences within their own communities. We shared concerns around access to clean, reliable and proper electricity, while reflecting on how these challenges affect our everyday lives.

The conversation shifted towards solutions where together we looked at the changes communities would like to see? What should local government be doing differently? And, with the local government elections approaching, what are the changes we want to see at a local level.

We closed the session by writing submissions to government and NERSA, sharing our concerns, recommendations and the kind of just energy future we want to see.
