Thereโ€™s something really special about a book in a childโ€™s hands ๐Ÿค

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the WAAL Foundation was able to source and distribute educational books to a number of ECD centres in Elsies River. These arenโ€™t just books, theyโ€™re tools for learning, imagination, confidence, and possibility.

In South Africa, itโ€™s estimated that only about 35% of Grade 4 learners can read for meaning. That reality starts long before formal schooling, which is why access to books in early childhood matters so deeply.

Early childhood is where everything begins. Access to resources like this can shape how a child sees themselves and the world around them.

Weโ€™re so grateful to everyone who continues to support this work. It truly takes a community.

Easter has always felt like a reminder.
To slow down. To reflect. To show up for people.

Itโ€™s about hope, yes, but also about what we choose to do with that hope. About sharing, caring, and being part of something bigger than ourselves, especially in the small, everyday ways.

This Easter, we spent some time in Elsies River, dropping off Easter eggs, sweets, and snacks to two ECD centres. Nothing big or complicated, just something simple. But those moments of joy, excitement, and connectionโ€ฆ they matter. Because community is built like that. Not in grand gestures, but in showing up, in giving what you can, and in doing it together.

Thank you to the people who made this possible:
Ashley Daniels (Ryan Construction)
Tarryn Samaai
Yolanda Jason
Glynn Johnson
Ashley Smith (Crazy Store)
Bubblez Laundromat (Pinelands)
Tracy and Adrian Sampson
And all our family and friends who contributed and showed up

Really grateful.

Happy Easter from the WAAL FOUNDATION ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฃ

From 2026, the WAAL Foundation will be expanding its work to include elderly care and support as a core focus of what we do.

While doing research last year, we came across a significant gap in support for elderly people in many of our communities, individuals who need care, dignity, love, and consistent support. In South Africa, over 5.5 million older people are affected by poverty, and many continue to support entire households on limited income. At the same time, the old age grant is often the only stable source of income in multigenerational homes, placing added pressure on elderly people who should be receiving care themselves.

It became clear that this is an area where we can show up more intentionally, and weโ€™ve made it one of our priorities going forward.

Weโ€™re incredibly grateful to the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) for helping us bring this vision to life with our very first project. Together, we were able to deliver nutritious oat milk to the residents of the Matroosfontein Assisted Living Facility in Elsies River and The Kensington Home for the Aged. The foundation also threw in some sweet treats for Easter to bring a smile to residents faces.

This is only the beginning. We have some meaningful projects lined up for the year ahead, and weโ€™re excited to keep building, learning, and showing up where itโ€™s needed most. Stay tuned ๐Ÿค

Recently, the WAAL Foundation had the opportunity to support the incredible work of Philisa Abafazi Bethu SA in Lavender Hill.

When I first visited, Lucinda shared something that has stayed with me, โ€œfriendsraisingโ€. Building real relationships is just as important as fundraising in this kind of work. This project is exactly that.

For over a decade, Philisa Abafazi Bethu has been a first responder to gender-based violence, offering safe housing and support to women, children, and vulnerable individuals. Their work extends far beyond that, from safe houses for women, children, and q***r youth, to after-school programmes, food support, rehabilitation assistance, and now an Early Childhood Development centre. Their doors are open to anyone who needs help.

With the opening of their ECD centre this year, we were honoured to come alongside them and support this next step.

This was only possible because of the incredible friends and partnerships the WAAL Foundation has built. We are deeply grateful, and even more grateful to now call Philisa Abafazi Bethu a friend.

Lucindaโ€™s hope is simple: that more people know about these services so that those who need support can find it.

Please help us spread the word. Follow, share, and support:

Today marks four years since we lost Warren and Arlene Lucas.

Their passing left a space in our lives that can never truly be filled. The grief is something we still carry, and their absence is felt every day.

In the midst of that pain, the Warren and Arlene Lucas (WAAL) Foundation was created in their honour. What began as a way to remember them and keep their spirit alive has grown into something that has deeply shaped our lives and the lives of many others.

Over the past four years, we have been able to turn grief into purpose. Through the work of the foundation, we have supported communities, invested in young people, and tried to carry forward the kindness, generosity, and love that Warren and Arlene showed to everyone around them.

We are incredibly grateful to every person who has supported the WAAL Foundation - our partners, volunteers, donors, and community members. Your belief in this work has helped transform loss into something meaningful.

Warren and Arlene may no longer be with us, but their legacy lives on in every life touched through this foundation.

Thank you for walking this journey with us.

A heartfelt thank you to The Westin Cape Town for their generous donation of learning materials and toys to PJs Educare Centre ๐Ÿค

These resources will go a long way in creating spaces of learning, creativity and joy for the children of Clarke Estate, Elsies River. Partnerships like this remind us how much can grow when communities support one another.

We are deeply grateful for your kindness and care, and we look forward to continued, fruitful collaboration in the future!

First little project of the year done ๐Ÿงก

Thanks to the amazing team at Pick n Pay Parow, we were able to donate porridge to several communities in and around Elsies River.

The management team at this Pick n Pay has consistently shown up for the community, and we are truly grateful for their ongoing support and generosity.

This is just the beginning. Weโ€™re excited for another year of growth, collaboration, and meaningful impact at the WAAL Foundation. Thank you to everyone who makes this work possible and who continues to walk this journey with us.

This festive season, we came together to create something special ๐ŸŽ„โœจ

Our chairperson, Craig Lucas, joined some of Cape Townโ€™s most celebrated artists and children from an early childhood development centre in Elsies River to record a live cover and music video of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

This project is first and foremost a thank-you to everyone who supported the work of the WAAL Foundation throughout 2025. None of what weโ€™ve achieved this year would have been possible without our partners, donors, collaborators, and community.
Itโ€™s also a gentle reminder. While December is a time of joy for many, it can be a difficult season for children in under-resourced communities, especially when schools and crรจches close and access to safe spaces and daily meals is lost.

Through this song, we hope to encourage a little more mindfulness and kindness this festive season. Even small acts of care can make a real difference.

A highlight of this project was the experience it created for the children involved. Fifteen children from Elsies River spent the day at Kwena Musicโ€™s studios, were treated like VIPs, recorded the song, and filmed the video alongside incredible artists. It was about joy, dignity, and belonging, and celebrating these little ones as collaborators and not beneficiaries.

A huge thank you to Kwena Music, Are You Jazz, and to Paxton Fielies, Jimmy Nevis, and Don Vino for making this collaboration so special.

๐ŸŽถ Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is out now on YouTube.
