🚨 SARZA Western Cape Volunteer Intake – June 2026 🚨

Have you ever wanted to be part of a worthy cause and make a real difference in your community?

SARZA Western Cape will be accepting a new intake of volunteers during June, and we would love to meet you!

✅ No rescue qualifications needed – we provide the training
✅ All ages welcome – our members range from teenagers to volunteers in their 70s
✅ There’s a role for everyone on a rescue operation
✅ We are LAND-BASED search & rescue (not Sea Rescue)
✅ Owning a 4x4 is helpful, but definitely not a requirement

To all the incredible mothers in our SARZA family — today we celebrate you.

Some of you are rescuers who answer the call, often placing the needs of others before your own. Some are spouses and partners who patiently support late-night callouts, long hours away from home, muddy boots at the door, and the emotional weight that rescue work can bring. Others are supporters, friends, and caring hearts who stand beside us every step of the way.

Your strength, compassion, sacrifice, and unwavering support make what we do possible. Behind every rescue is someone who encourages, comforts, motivates, and believes in us — and so often, that person is a mother.

Today, SARZA Western Cape proudly celebrates its 5th birthday!

What began as a small group of passionate volunteers has grown into a respected and trusted search and rescue unit serving communities across the Western Cape. To every member, supporter, sponsor, and especially the families of our volunteers who sacrifice time alongside us, thank you for your unwavering dedication, hard work, and belief in what we do. Your commitment has helped build an organisation known for professionalism, compassion, and service to others when they need it most.

Another Ultra Trail event done!

SARZA Western Cape was trusted to be the search and rescue partner for the inaugural Black Mountain Ultra last weekend, providing a multi-day deployment across a remote and technically demanding route. The event highlighted our ability to function independently over extended distances, with teams and logistics fully self-sufficient in the field. Teams were positioned along the route, sleeping in the mountain to ensure continuous coverage and a quick response throughout the event.

A key highlight of the deployment was Team 1 conducting a 22km wheeled stretcher carry with a 60kg load of gear, moving from the Donkey Trail over Wyenek to Living Waters. In parallel, our communications team were able to deploy radio equipment purchased with funds from a recent Western Cape Government Disaster Risk Management donation. This state of the art repeater system allowed us to set up a communications network in an area where there is no signal or existing radio network. A perfect simulation of a real disaster event where existing infrastructure may be out of service. Despite the complexity of the terrain and conditions, the event was without any major incidents, demonstrating our capacity to plan, deploy, and sustain effective search and rescue operations in isolated environments.

The SARZA Western Cape team are ready for the Black Mountain Ultra this coming weekend!

With four routes of 6km, 19km, 43km and a grueling 73km we have our work cut out for us. The team have spent the past few weekends in the area the race takes place to test radio communications, satellite tracking and plan evacuation routes should we need to conduct a rescue.

We wish all the runners the best of luck for the event!

Another major event done!

SARZA Western Cape are proud to have been trusted by the Two Oceans Marathon event organisers this year to provide search and rescue teams for the trail run events. Our teams were ready to assist any injured runners and to cheer them on as they came past.

We also had teams coordinating the sweep operation for both the ultra and half marathon on Saturday and Sunday.

Our SARZA Western Cape team are out on Table Mountain tonight supporting the Batrun event with search and rescue support along the route! Our teams have been on the route since 6pm and will be there until the race finishes at 5am tomorrow.
