🌊 Whose voice shapes the future of our ocean? 💙
In celebration of Women’s Month and the diverse voices that make up South Africa’s ocean community, several members of the team had the privilege of attending a powerful Deep Dialogue on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) at the Two Oceans Aquarium.
Hosted by Loyiso Dunga and Nina Rivers, the evening brought together people from different backgrounds, disciplines and lived experiences to reflect on the past, present and future of MPAs in South Africa.
We were especially proud to see our Co-Director, Calley Chateau-Cyster, Calley Chateau-Cyster take to the panel to share how her work through is helping to reimagine how we—and particularly the youth of South Africa—can connect with, care for and conserve our marine spaces. 🌊💙
For the STBP team, this was more than a conversation. It was a reminder that the future of our ocean must be shaped by many voices, many forms of knowledge and many lived experiences.
We left the room feeling hopeful. Hopeful for a future where communities are not simply consulted, but are active partners in shaping the decisions that affect their ocean and coastal spaces.
Here’s the question we’re taking with us:
💠How do we move from a model where scientists “bring knowledge to communities” towards one where scientific, Indigenous and local knowledge are genuinely co-produced—and where that knowledge actually influences policy and management?
