WORLD OCEANS DAY CLEANUP — THIS SATURDAY 🌊

Just a reminder that we’ll be gathering at Kalk Bay Harbour this Saturday, 6 June, for our annual World Oceans Day Cleanup.

Every year, this day brings together an incredible community of ocean lovers, divers, volunteers, organisations and brands who care deeply about protecting the places we all share.

A huge thank you to our partners and collaborators for helping make this year’s event possible:

Whether you’re joining us on land or in the water, we’d love to have you there.

If you haven’t already, please make sure to pre-register via the link in our bio so we know you’re coming.

See you in Kalk Bay 🌊💙

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Cape Town’s first Big Wave Risk Assessment Group (.w.r.a.g) Safety Summit here in Hout Bay 🌊

Over two days, surfers, lifeguards, coaches, watermen and women, adaptive surfers, and ocean safety leaders came together to share knowledge, train practical rescue skills, and deepen conversations around ocean risk management and safety culture.

From classroom sessions and emergency action planning to hands-on rescue scenarios on the beach — it was incredibly inspiring to see so many people committed to making our ocean spaces safer, stronger, and more connected.

A huge thank you to the legends involved in bringing this together, including , .kelley, , , and everyone who travelled from near and far to take part.

Special shoutout to our founder , whose vision and persistence helped finally bring the summit to South African shores after years of trying to make it happen.

For us at SOA, it was a reminder of how powerful community, mentorship, and shared knowledge can be – especially in places connected to the ocean.

Really proud to have been involved in this one ❤️

Some of the most important work happening on our coastline doesn’t happen in boardrooms or campaigns.

It happens in cold water.
On windy beaches.
In classrooms.
Around shared meals.
During early mornings and long afternoons spent showing young people that the ocean belongs to them too.

Every week, Sentinel Ocean Alliance creates access to ocean education, mentorship, surf therapy, environmental learning, movement, safety, and community for young people in Hout Bay.

For many of the kids in our programmes, this space becomes far more than just time in the water. It becomes confidence. Routine. Support. Belonging. Opportunity.

While our café helps support the work, these programmes ultimately depend on people, partners, and communities who choose to back them directly.

Right now, we are actively looking for funding and support to help sustain and grow these initiatives.

Whether you’re an individual, a brand, a foundation, or simply someone who believes in what we do — your support genuinely makes a difference.

You can support SOA by:
• Visiting the Sentinel Café
• Partnering with a programme
• Donating directly
• Sharing our work
• Connecting us with potential sponsors or collaborators

If you’d like to get involved, please reach out via DM or email us at [email protected]

Thank you for helping us keep this work moving forward 🌊

Sentinel Ocean Alliance is a community-driven nonprofit based in Hout Bay, Cape Town, working at the intersection of ocean education, water safety, youth development, and environmental stewardship.

Through a set of integrated, hands-on programmes, we create meaningful access to the ocean for young people — many of whom have grown up alongside it without the opportunity to safely or confidently engage with it.

Our work includes:
🌊 Ocean education
🏊 Learn-to-swim & ocean safety programmes
♿ Adaptive ocean experiences for learners with special needs
🧭 Leadership & mentorship development
🤝 Coach training & employment pathways

But this work is about more than just the ocean.

It’s about confidence.
Belonging.
Connection.
Opportunity.

We believe the ocean can become a powerful space for learning, healing, growth, and community — and that every young person deserves access to that experience.

Alongside our programmes, Sentinel Café helps support the work happening on site, with proceeds contributing directly toward our initiatives.

This page exists to share more of what’s happening on the ground:
the people, the programmes, the impact, and the community helping make it all possible.

WORLD OCEANS DAY CLEANUP — KALK BAY 🌊

On 6 June, we’re heading to Kalk Bay Harbour for our annual World Oceans Day cleanup — bringing together ocean lovers, divers, community groups, and collaborators for a day of action above and below the water.

Every year, this day reminds us how connected we all are to the ocean — whether through food, livelihood, culture, wellbeing, or simply the spaces that make us feel alive.

And every year, we’re reminded that protecting it starts with showing up.

This cleanup has become one of our favourite community days on the calendar, and we’re incredibly excited to be teaming up with an amazing group of partners and collaborators again this year.

Whether you’re joining us on land, underwater, or simply coming to be part of the energy — we’d love to have you there.

We wanted to share a bit of where Sentinel Ocean Alliance is at right now.

Over the past few years, our work has expanded and deepened. Thousands of young people have come through our ocean education and ocean therapy programmes—showing up week after week, building confidence in the water, and beginning to form a lasting connection to the ocean.

As we look ahead, we’re starting to open up to new partners and supporters to help us continue and grow this work.

We’re reaching out to our wider community — friends, customers, collaborators, and people who’ve crossed paths with Sentinel along the way — because often the right connections come from exactly those places.

If something here resonates, we’d love to start a conversation.

We recently spent 2 hours cleaning Camps Bay tidal pool ♻️✨

88 people showed up.
Kids, adults — community.

Here’s what we found:

– 218kg of waste
– Most of it non-recyclable
– 180 cigarette butts
– 61 sweet wrappers
– 46 plastic bottles

Plus nappies, fishing line, ear buds, wet wipes…
The kind of stuff we use without thinking.

This isn’t coming from “somewhere else.”
It’s ours.

The ocean just collects it.

The good news?
People are showing up. The work is happening.

The hard truth?
We need a lot more of it.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved — this is your sign. Keep an eye out on our profile for information on our next cleanup!

First one of the year. Third annual. Same mission. 🌊♻️

Sentinel Ocean Alliance is kicking off 2026 with our 3rd Annual Camps Bay Cleanup — and we’re starting strong. After two powerful years, we’re back at one of Cape Town’s most iconic beaches to protect what protects us.

This isn’t just a cleanup — it’s a statement. Every bag collected helps create safer oceans, stronger coastal communities, and a future our kids can swim in.

🔥 Big love to The Lab for coming on board with epic prizes for our ocean warriors on the day — we appreciate you backing the blue!

✅ Bags and gloves will be provided — just bring your friends and the gees.
