🇿🇦 This week, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) released the Industrial Development Strategy (IDS) 2026, falling under the new Growth and Inclusion (GAIN) Strategy framework. GAIN represents the biggest set of economic reforms since GEAR in 1996. Linked below is our new briefing paper on GAIN, in which we discuss its purpose and origins, and critique its limitations. 📌 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧: The AIDC is gravely concerned about the spread of Afrophobic and xenophobic sentiment gripping large parts of South African society. We call on progressive organisations, trade unions, faith communities, and civil society groups, as well as individuals, to build unity across national and ethnic lines within working-class and marginalised communities. It is essential to unite the struggles of migrants and local residents around their shared experiences and conditions. Read our full statement here. ⤵️

Amadiba Crisis Committee 2026-06-09:
Local governments and political interventions blocked the ‘Fix the Broken N2 project” marches in Khanyayo and Amadiba rural areas.

ISITATIMENDE ESIBHALWE NGESI NGUNI SINGEZANTSI !

- Two protected community marches in Eastern Cape that were organised for 9 and 10 June under the slogan ‘Fix the Broken N2 Project’ are being postponed.

- The marches in Khanyayo and Amadiba will now take place in the beginning of July.

- The two rural communities are located on the south and the north sides of the Mtentu mega bridge project, a part of the N2 Wild Coast Toll Highway project.

- The organisers had to postpone the marches after municipality officials alleged there had been last minute interventions by the MEC of Transport and Security in Eastern Cape, Mr Xolile Nqatha.

- Mr Nqatha is the chair of the ”N2 political oversight committee”

Says Nonhle Mbuthuma: “When communities are following the right procedures and notify, or even ‘apply’, for peaceful marches to deliver petitions about what is going wrong in the N2 project, it is being deliberately sabotaged.”

“COMMUNITY MARCH APPLICATIONS IGNORED AND SABOTAGED”

“Either, the applications are ignored, which was the case in Mbizana for a month. Or the SAPS don’t turn up to the meeting and then says they will not protect the march for lack of time, which is the case in Khanyayo.”

“SANRAL says they have ‘a procedure’ which is to go to the municipalities. Even in Parliament, when debating the Amadiba N2 Petition, we are told that ‘local engagements’ must be done.”

“But locally, they have no clue on community proposals and complaints. Locally, they fear corrupt interests in the N2 project and party factions. They can’t respond and they pass on problems.

“The N2 project is broken, and the grievance mechanisms are also broken.”

“This doesn’t mean the N2 project cannot be repaired. But as we say in the Petition to Parliament: The project must take a break. There needs to be a Mid Term Review”.

On 12 May last year, a representative of the national Department of Transport came to receive the Memorandum by the Mtentu bridge build. This year, the community marches will be in both Amadiba and Khanyayo.

“THE N2 PROJECT CRISIS CONCERNS AT LEAST SIX DEPARTMENTS”

“Khanyayo and Amadiba community will welcome members of the new SANRAL Board, the national ministers of Transport, Environment, Water and Sanitation, Labour and Employment, Land Affairs as well as the Treasury to receive the two memorandums of Khanyayo and Amadiba, or the delegated representatives of the ministers.”

“The crisis in the N2 project concerns all those department.”

MARCH APPLICATIONS IS A FORMALITY

In South African law, an application for a peaceful march is a formality. It is a notice.

“The applications were presented in good time, and according to the law. The marches will be announced again.

“This time we expect no sabotage”.

“All we need is for the national government to take the N2 project seriously and officials not passing on the buck. A part of that is to protect the resources of the state. That protection is failing. Another part is to protect sensitive environment and the rights of communities.”

“The government’s responsibility includes to protect and respect the rights of communities to march and put forward their grievances.”

Amadiba Crisis Committee 2026-06-09:

Oorhulumente basekhaya kunye nongenelelo lwezopolitiko luthintele iimatshi ezithi ‘Lungisa iprojekthi ka-N2 eyaphukileyo’ kwaKhanyayo nakwaAmadiba emaphandleni.

- Iimatshi ezikhuselekileyo zemiPhakathi emibini e-Eastern Cape ebezihlelewe umhla we-09 nowe 10 kaJune ngaphantsi kwesiqubulo esithi ‘Lungisa iProjekthi yeN2 eyaphukileyo’ iyamiswa.

- imatshi yakwaKhanyayo nakwaAmadiba ngoku izakuqhubeka ekuqaleni kukaJulayi.

- Iilali ezimbini zimi kumazantsi nasemacaleni eprojekthi yebhulorho enkulu yaseMtentu, eyinxalenye yoHola weNdlela oRhafelwayo u-N2 Wild Coast.

-Abahleli kuye kwanyanzeleka ukuba bahlehlise imatshi emva kokuba amagosa kaMasipala etyhola ungenelelo ngomzuzu wokugqibela nguMphathiswa wezoThutho noKhuseleko eMpuma Koloni, umnumzana Xolile Nqatha.

- Umnumzane Nqatha ungusihlalo we “N2 Political Oversight Committee”

UNonhle Mbuthuma uthi: “Xa uluntu lulandela iinkqubo ezifanelekileyo kwaye lwazisa, okanye “lude lufake izicelo”, lwematshi enoxolo yokuzisa amaxwebhu ezikhalazo malunga noko kungahambi kakuhle kwiprojekthi ye-N2, konakaliswa ngabom.”

“IZICELO ZAMA-MATSHI OLUNTU ZIYAZITYWA KWAYE ZICHITHWA”

“inoba izicelo azihoywa, nto leyo ibisenzeka eMbizana kangangenyanga, okanye iSAPS ingezi entlanganisweni emva koko ithi ayizukuwukhusela umngcelele, we matshi, ekuyinto eyenzeka kwaKhanyayo.

“U-SANRAL uthi ‘unenkqubo’ ethi makuyiwe kooMasipala, naxa bekuxoxwa ngoxwebhu lwezikhalazo lwase-Amadiba N2 ePalamente saxelelwa ukuba ‘iingxoxo zasekuhlaleni’ mazenziwe.

"Kodwa ekhuhlaleni, abakwazi ukuphikisana neziphakamiso zoluntu kunye nezikhalazo. Ekhuhlaleni, boyika umdla wobuqhophololo kwiprojekthi ye-N2 kunye namaqela eqela. Abakwazi ukuphendula kuluntu kwaye badlulisa iingxaki.

“Iprojekthi ka-N2 yophukile, kwaye neendlela zokufaka izikhalazo zophukile.”

"Akuthethi ukuba iprojekthi ka-N2 ayinakulungiswa. Kodwa njengoko sisitsho kwiSikhalazo esiya ePalamente: Iprojekthi kufuneka ithathe ikhefu. Kufuneka kubekho uPhononongo lweXesha eliphakathi".

Ngomhla ka-12 kuCanzibe kulo nyaka uphelileyo, ummeli weSebe lezoThutho kuzwelonke weza ukuzokwamkela iMemorandam ngokwakhiwa kwebhulorho yaseMtentu. Kulo nyaka imatshi yolunto izodibanisa Amadiba kunye noKhanyayo.

“INGXAKI YEPROJEKTHI KA-N2 INXAPHAZELA BUNCANE AMASEBE AMATHANDATHU”

“Uluntu lwakwaKhanyayo nolwakwa Amadiba luza kwamkela amalungu eBhodi entsha yakwaSANRAL, abaphathiswa besizwe bezoThutho, okusiNgqongileyo, aManzi noGutyulo, iMisebenzi neNgqesho, iMicimbi yoMhlaba kunye noNondyebo ukuba bafumane iimemoranda ezimbini zakwaKhanyayo nakwaAmadiba, okanye abameli abathunyiweyo babaphathiswa.”

“Ingxaki enzulu kwiprojekthi ye-N2 ichaphazela onke loo masebe.”

IZICELO NGEMATSHI ZISEMTHETWENI

Ngokomthetho izicelo zematshi zisesikweni kuphela.

“Izicelo zifakwe kwangethuba, ngokomthetho, imingcelele iza kubhengezwa kwakhona.

"Ngesi sihlandlo silindele ukuba kungabikho monakalo".

“Esikudingayo kukuba urhulumente kazwelonke ayithathele phezulu le projekthi uN2 kwaye amagosa angadlulisi mbaxa, Inxalenye yalonto kukukhusela ubutyebi borhulumente, nto leyo engaphumeleliyo, enye into kukukhusela okusingqongileyo okubuthathaka kwanamalungelo oluntu.”

"Kubandakanya ukukhusela nokuhlonipha amalungelo oluntu okumatsha kwaye abeke phambili izikhalazo zawo."

Last week, the AIDC submitted comments to the Department of Cooperative Governance on the Reviewed White Paper on Local Government. The AIDC argues that the White Paper’s 65 policy proposals, including origin-based VAT revenue sharing and expanded public-private partnerships, are mere tweaks to a fundamentally flawed model.
