Hunger does not distinguish between documentation and citizenship, yet fear often dictates who can safely access food. ๐ฟ๐ฆ
This , we must look beyond crop yields and inflation to the human reality in our communities. The 2026 State of Household Food Insecurity Report reveals a severe crisis, forcing 77.8% of vulnerable parents to have heartbreaking conversations with their children about food scarcity.
For many black foreign nationals, this hunger is exacerbated by targeted, systematic terror. Research by Dr. Marc Wegerif, published in the Daily Maverick, highlights that immigrant traders are pillars of community survival, selling essential staples for 32.7% to 50% less than corporate grocery chains.
Yet, ongoing intimidation has turned the act of earning a living into a life-threatening risk. Due to deep-seated fear and institutional distrust, this violence is rarely reported to authorities.
We must call this out: stripping a person of their livelihood is a violation of basic dignity. Whether they are a spaza shop owner or a casual employee, ordinary people are being pushed into starvation over macro-level policy failures they cannot control. Threatening honest workers does not protect a neighborhood; it destroys affordable food pipelines and deepens local trauma.
๐ The Hidden Reality:
The current statistics are only a fraction of the true crisis. Because research often relies on formal food aid distribution points, it misses thousands of refugees and migrants living in hiding. Cut off from social grants and too terrified to wait in public aid lines, their suffering remains invisible to the system.
