💙 International Nurses Day – Today we celebrate the nurses who care for children living with congenital heart disease. Their compassion, patience and expertise provide comfort during some of the most difficult moments families face. Thank you for being the steady hands and kind hearts behind paediatric cardiac care.

For many children living with congenital heart disease, school can look a little different. There may be days for rest, medical appointments or limitations during physical activities. With understanding teachers and supportive friends, Heart Warriors can still thrive and succeed. Awareness makes inclusion possible.

💛❤️ A Truly Special Milestone for Heart Kids SA ❤️💛

While Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital has performed many life-saving operations, this moment marked a first for us.

For the very first time, Heart Kids SA was able to contribute financially towards a child’s heart operation — something we have always hoped to do, but had never been in a position to achieve until now.

With procedures costing anywhere from R250 000 to over R1 million, this milestone represents more than just funding — it represents hope, progress and the power to truly change a child’s life.

Seeing the child’s mother’s joy and relief reminded us exactly why this work matters. 💛

This is just the beginning.

🧼 World Hand Hygiene Day reminds us how important infection prevention is for children living with CHD. For many heart warriors, preventing illness can mean avoiding hospital complications. Simple actions like regular handwashing help protect vulnerable little hearts.

What does your heart warrior dream of becoming?
A teacher.
A doctor.
An athlete.
An artist.

Congenital Heart Disease may shape the journey, but it does not limit ambition.
Growing up with CHD still includes dreaming big. đź’›

A child with Congenital Heart Disease is more than a diagnosis.
They are curious, playful, determined and full of personality.

CHD may be part of their story but it does not define their potential.
Growing up with CHD means hospital visits, check-ups and sometimes surgery. But it also means birthdays, friendships, laughter and milestones worth celebrating.
Every heart warrior deserves to grow up feeling seen beyond their condition. đź’›

Life after congenital heart surgery can include school achievements, career dreams, friendships and family milestones.
CHD is lifelong — but so is hope.

Growing up with CHD includes thriving. đź’›

Living with a lifelong heart condition can bring anxiety, uncertainty and emotional strain.

Mental health support is just as important as medical care.
When we talk about Congenital Heart Disease, we must talk about the whole child heart and mind.

Awareness creates safer spaces for honest conversations. đź’›

Teenagers living with Congenital Heart Disease are learning independence while managing appointments, medication and long-term care.

Transitioning from paediatric to adult cardiology is a major milestone.
Growing up with CHD means learning to advocate for your own heart.
And that strength lasts a lifetime. đź’›

Can children with CHD play sport?

In many cases, yes, with guidance.

Every child’s heart condition is unique. With input from a paediatric cardiologist, safe levels of activity can often be encouraged.

Inclusion matters. Movement matters. Confidence matters.

Growing up with CHD doesn’t mean sitting on the sidelines. 💛
