Today, as we look forward to World Refugee Day on the 20th of June 2026, Scalabrini pauses to recognise the strength, courage and resilience of refugees, asylum seekers and all people on the move.

Around the world, millions of people have been forced to leave their homes because of conflict, persecution, violence, economic hardship and other circumstances beyond their control. Behind every statistic is a human story, a parent seeking safety for their child, a young person searching for opportunity, a family hoping to rebuild their lives with dignity.

At a time when migration is the subject of intense public debate in South Africa and across the world, we look at World Refugee Day as a reminder of our shared humanity. While communities face real social and economic challenges, we believe that lasting solutions are built through dialogue, understanding and respect for the dignity of every person.

Refugees and migrants are more than labels, statistics and numbers. They are neighbours, colleagues, entrepreneurs, students, friends and community members who contribute to the social, cultural and economic life of our country every day.

This World Refugee Day, we invite everyone to choose compassion over fear, understanding over division, and solidarity over exclusion.

Together, with strength and courage, we build communities where every person can belong.

This is a fact sheet from Collective Voices for Health Access pushing back against anti-migrant narratives in South Africa.

It uses census data, government reports, and academic research to address myths claiming that migrants are responsible for unemployment, service pressure, and social grant strain. It shows that rather than blaming outsiders we should ask what insiders have taken through corruption, underfunding, and structural inequality - and why no one is challenging this.

It also places South Africa within a recognisable global pattern of economic scapegoating, and argues that acting on evidence rather than myths help us address the real problem and break the xenophobic pattern of misdirected blame.

Today marks the beginning of Child Protection Week, a time to raise awareness, advocate for children’s rights, and reaffirm our collective responsibility to create safe, nurturing environments for every child.

At Scalabrini we believe every child deserves protection, dignity, care, and the opportunity to thrive. Throughout this week, we stand together in promoting the safety and wellbeing of children everywhere.
