Umbrella Civic 92+ Community!

Join us for our 2026 AGM, Wednesday 30 September.

We will:
-Report back and reflect on our work over this year
-Look ahead at what comes next
-Elect a new coordinating committee to champion the work

We are looking for new volunteers to join our Coordinating team! If you or someone you know is interested in contributing their skills please have a look at our attached outline of portfolios and expectations. If you don't want to lead, but would like to be involved please reach out to us regardless and attend our AGM where you can be involved as support on a number of different projects.

Attention! We are officially now Ward 92 (previously 57+) following the new 2026 boundary demarcation. Please see the map below for the boundary.

The ward now comprises of Woodstock, Salt River, Observatory, Walmer Estate, University Estate and parts of District Six and Parden Eiland.

What's different?:
-The ward now comprises of the entire Woodstock and Salt River instead of only part of it
-The ward now includes a part of District Six and Parden Eiland
-Mowbray and Rosebank now form part of a different ward

The Obs Knowledge Café is a neighbourhood-focused event that aims to create a civic intellectual space where knowledge can be freely shared beyond academia and other spaces of knowledge that are not accessible to everyone. The lectures will be by people who live or work in Observatory, or have some other special connection to the neighbourhood, or about a subject related to our neighbourhood. Curated by local academics Dr Jana Vosloo and Dr Vasti Calitz, the lectures are free to attend and take place monthly.

This month, the topic was Racism, How and why: Ganesh's potential as a convivial space

Ganesh’s history has embodied a tradition of non-racialism, a space known as an exception within Cape Town’s public life. While over the last decade the inspiration of post-apartheid Rainbowism has gradually faded, the polarization of racial difference has become overt. Yet Ganesh remains a space of conviviality, where people mix across racial, class and age differences, engaging in endless conversations. But what else can Ganesh do beyond merely offering the space? How could applied anthropology collapse racism and push the boundaries beyond inherent identity politics?
