Most people picture hospice care as something that happens in a home, and for the majority of our patients, that is exactly right. But we also have a Support Centre, and it is one of the most misunderstood parts of what we offer.

The Helderberg Hospice Support Centre is a short-term, specialist in-patient facility in Somerset West. People come in for a defined period and then return home to continue care there.

It is not a frail care home. It is not a long-term placement. It is a focused space for three specific needs: managing pain and symptoms that have become difficult at home, giving exhausted families a planned period of respite, and providing dedicated end of life care when that is what a family chooses.

If you have questions about the Support Centre, you are welcome to contact us directly on 021 852 4608.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among South African men. Caught early, it is often very treatable. Caught late, the picture changes considerably.

The difficulty is that early prostate cancer frequently has no obvious symptoms at all. There is nothing to feel, nothing to push a man towards the doctor. Which is exactly why screening matters, particularly for men over 40, or younger if there is a family history. It is a quick conversation with your GP. It is not something to file under "one day".

At Helderberg Hospice, our work begins further along the journey, and we see clearly what a difference timing makes to a person's options and comfort. Early detection genuinely changes lives. If you are a man over 40, or you love one, treat this as a nudge. Book the check and learn more here: https://cansa.org.za/prostate-cancer/

How many men do you know who will book a doctor's appointment the moment something feels wrong? For many men, the instinct is to wait. To carry on. To call it nothing and hope it settles. It is a habit built over a lifetime, and most of the time it causes no harm.

But serious illness does not wait. A symptom ignored for months can mean a diagnosis that arrives later and harder than it needed to. At Helderberg Hospice, we often meet men whose illness was already advanced by the time anyone took a proper look. June is Men's Health Month and we are asking the men in our community, and the people who love them, to treat early symptoms quickly. Noticing something and acting on it is not weakness. It is care, for yourself and for everyone who depends on you.

If something has felt off for a while, this is your reminder to have it checked.

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day, and it is worth pausing on what that actually means. Survivorship is not a single moment or a finish line. For some people it is being years clear of treatment. For others it is living well alongside an illness that is still part of daily life. For many, it is the quieter work of rebuilding after treatment ends: the fatigue, the check-ups, the recalibrating of what normal looks like.

All of it counts. All of it deserves to be recognised.

At Helderberg Hospice, our care is often associated with the end of the journey, but palliative care is really about quality of life at every stage of a serious illness. It is about comfort, dignity and support, whether someone is receiving active treatment, living with cancer long-term, or facing its final chapter. Today we hold all of this in mind: those who are well, those still in the thick of it, those who carry the loss of someone, and the families who walked every step alongside them.

Helderberg Hospice invites you to a Creative Workshop. Through a gentle, nature-inspired creative activity, this workshop offers a safe and welcoming space for those experiencing grief and loss.

Together, we will explore creativity, quiet reflection, and supportive conversation in a calm and compassionate environment. The workshop is designed to help participants slow down, connect with others, and express emotions in a way that feels comfortable and meaningful.

No artistic experience is needed — the focus is not on creating art perfectly, but on the experience of being present, expressing yourself, and finding support alongside others who may understand what you are going through. Whether your loss is recent or long ago, you are warmly welcome.

Home-based care is at the core of what Helderberg Hospice does. For patients whose serious illness is manageable outside a facility, and who want to remain in familiar surroundings, our interdisciplinary team comes to you.

Regular visits from our doctors, nurses, and social workers mean that pain is monitored and managed consistently, symptoms are addressed as they change, and both the patient and the people caring for them receive emotional and practical support.
Home-based care is not a lesser option. For many patients and families, it is the right one: https://helderberghospice.org.za/will-hospice-come-to-your-home/

At Helderberg Hospice, our multidisciplinary team includes nurses, social workers, and trained volunteers who coordinate care around what patients actually need on any given day. Hospice and palliative care can be provided at home, or in our in-patient unit. The setting is chosen based on the patient's condition and/or the family's capacity, not on a fixed process.

What families most often describe after the fact is not just that their loved one was comfortable. It is that they felt seen and taken seriously during an incredibly difficult time. That is what quality care looks like in practice.

Today we celebrate the nurses of Helderberg Hospice. The ones who hold a hand when words aren't enough, and who carry the weight of their patients' hardest days with extraordinary grace. Nursing in palliative care asks more than most people realise. It asks you to show up fully, every single day, for people and families navigating some of the most profound moments of their lives.

To our entire nursing team: thank you. What you do matters more than we can say! Happy International Nurses Day.

Families let us know that they want to keep their loved one at home for as long as possible and we do our best to help make that happen.

Caring for someone who is seriously ill at home requires the right equipment from hospital beds, mobility equipment, specialised mattresses and comfort support. These are not luxuries. They are what make safe, dignified home care possible.

Our equipment rental and loan service provides what families need so that the choice between proper care and staying home never has to be made, because home is where many people want to be.

If someone you love is living with a serious illness, support exists. Real, practical, compassionate support, right here in the Helderberg: www.helderberghospice.org.za | 021 852 4608
