Green Building Council South Africa GBCSA Transforming the built environment for people and planet to thrive.

The Green Building Council South Africa is one of 75 members of the World Green Building Council alongside Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom. Founded in 2007, we are a dedicated team working in collaboration with industry bodies, leaders, government departments and professionals to develop market-based green building solutions for the transformation of the South African property

industry. We are a member-based organisation whose core focus is green building certification and training. We advocate for all buildings to be designed, built and operated in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Building a sustainable future requires every voice at the table and each person's unique perspective.

We'll be celebrating the diverse and inspiring women who are the finalists of the Women in Green Building 2026 competition. This week, we asked the finalists to share a photograph of something they've encountered in their work and their perspective on these unique moments. Thanks to Mokgadi Melwa, Justine Powrie, and Samukelisiwe Mkize for their contribution.

In the coming weeks, there'll be more words of wisdom and their stories of where they've come from, the people who've believed in them, and the courage to believe in themselves.

To commemorate the 4 Star Green Star - Office Design certification of Junxion Park, a plaque handover was recently held in Cape Town.

Junxion Park is a redevelopment of part of the former Ratanga Junction site that comprises three office buildings, targeted for Green Star and EDGE certification. Some of the property's sustainability features include energy efficient lighting, efficient heat pumps, smart energy and water monitoring, and treated effluent from Potsdam Waste Water Treatment Works is used for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation.

Congratulations to the Junxion Park project team!

With green buildings needing to adapt to changing climate conditions, the tension between indoor comfort and energy usage is a hot topic recently explored at our Planet Shapers event in Cape Town, hosted in collaboration with Samsung.

GBCSA's Bakang Moeng, Public Sector Advocacy and Sustainability Manager, and Samsung’s Joseph Kaseke, Engineering Manager, engaged a lively audience with a discussion on efficient buildings designed to use as little energy as possible, and exploring the ways to achieve a healthy and comfortable building.

The two experts specifically addressed the climate risk factors found in the Western Cape like higher temperatures, veld fires, as well as water scarcity, and how these impact buildings.

To enjoy a high performance building that is climate resilient, it must also balance energy efficiency and occupant well-being. What this means for building HVAC systems is a shift towards remote management thanks to the Internet of Things, and smart connections. These systems gather data and optimise indoor air quality throughout a building. Manufacturers like Samsung are looking at the challenges in climate and energy, and creating solutions that allow for comfort and support the drive to reduce carbon emissions as well as energy use.

The event was also a fantastic opportunity for networking among attendees. GBCSA events are the ideal occasion to get industry insights while connecting with fellow green building professionals. Keep an eye on our social media and website gbcsa.org.za for upcoming event information.

The 2025 MSCI Annual Green Property Index is a significant milestone for green buildings. In this excerpt from the webinar presentation of results, GBCSA CEO Georgina Smit explains why every building in South Africa should be taking the first steps on their journey to sustainability.

The study now has a decade's worth of data showing that green-certified Prime- and A-grade offices have outperformed comparable non-certified offices by a cumulative 28.2%, providing compelling evidence of the long-term investment value associated with sustainable real estate. A decade ago, the investment case for green-certified property was still being tested. Today, the conversation has shifted from aspiration to evidence.

On Wednesday, 5 August 2026, GBCSA hosted another of our popular AP Connect events at our Cape Town office🤝

With the entire GBCSA team in attendance, CEO Georgina Smit shared very exciting news about big projects in the pipeline as well as the first Green Star New Build V2 certification. The event was also an opportunity for one-on-one conversations, networking, and knowledge sharing from current projects.

We showcased the presentation slides, stats and graphs that were created to support our Accredited Professionals, especially for use when they need to share insights with stakeholders to inform decisions - we clearly explain the data that reflects that green is a more profitable way to build.
