January is Braille Awareness Month. More than just six dots.
To our clients braille means: Literacy. Learning. Independence. Education. Employment. Freedom. Orientation. Access. Safety. Fun. Enjoyment. Information. Knowledge. Opportunity. Community. Connection. Inclusion. Belonging. Contribution. Participation. Success. Growth. Life-changing. Hope. Confidence. Empowerment.

LOFOB empowers blind and visually impaired people, and their families with braille training, books, materials, assistive devices, and technology. To learn more about, and to donate to our braille programs visit www.lofob.org.za. We’re inviting schools to schedule a braille awareness session for their learners with us during Term 1. 3 DECEMBER 2025. LOFOB joins the global community in commemorating International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Everyone has a seat at the table, and everyone’s voice matters. As a country, may we always strive to do more to include, accept, and support people with disabilities. Today especially, LOFOB honours blind and visually impaired children, youth, and adults; their parents, carers, and supporters. Your resilience, and contributions inspire us everyday.

March is Glaucoma Awareness Month in South Africa. Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and potentially blindness. Often referred to as the "silent thief of sight", it can cause vision loss without any noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Symptoms include blind spots, eye redness/ inflammation, eye pain/ pressure. Risk factors include age 60+; family history of glaucoma; those diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease.

LOFOB encourages comprehensive eye exams every 2-3 yrs if you're under 40, every 1-2 yrs if you're 40+; maintaining a healthy weight; regular exercise; and quitting smoking.
