Connecting Communities to Conservation

What better way to celebrate World Teachers’ Day than by celebrating the teachers who are helping us grow a love for nature from the very beginning! 🌍

On Saturday, our WILD HEARTS teachers in the Deep South came together for their latest training for the year as part of our Connecting Communities to Conservation project.

We explored three upcoming Term 4 modules – African Safari, Baboon and Buffalo – building on our earlier Chameleon training and equipping teachers with everything they need to bring these lessons to life in their classrooms.

A huge thank you to the Table Mountain Fund, managed by the WWF South Africa for making this project possible, and to Bhongolethu Foundation for generously providing the facility for our training.
And today, a special thank you to our teachers – for your enthusiasm, commitment and the incredibly important role you play in inspiring the next generation of nature lovers and conservationists. 💚

CELEBRATING SOUTH AFRICA’S NATURAL HERITAGE 🌿

This Heritage Day, we celebrate more than our cultures, traditions and stories. We celebrate the extraordinary natural heritage that makes South Africa so special – from our iconic proteas and African penguins to southern right whales, tiny dung beetles, colourful chameleons and so much more. 💚
Through WILD HEARTS, we’re helping children discover that this natural heritage belongs to them too – something to know, love, value and protect.

One lesson at a time.
One teacher at a time.
One school at a time.
One little WILD HEART at a time. 💚

Because protecting South Africa’s natural heritage begins with helping our youngest learners understand just how extraordinary it is.

We’re excited to share that our WILD HEARTS Environmental Education resources are now freely available on the Tenthouse Structures website!

Designed for ECD and Foundation Phase learners, WILD HEARTS makes environmental education fun, practical and easy to bring into the classroom through stories, movement, games, creative activities and hands-on learning.

31 of our 45 WILD HEARTS topics are already online, with the remaining resources coming soon.
Teachers and educators can simply download, print and teach – completely free.

Connecting Communities to Conservation
Southern Peninsula (Deep South) | Training Session 1 Complete

From the mountains of Barrydale and Montagu to the heart of the Deep South – our second Connecting Communities to Conservation teacher training is complete! 🌿

It was an absolute privilege to welcome another inspiring group of educators into the WILD HEARTS Environmental Education Programme, where they'll be equipped with practical, hands-on tools to bring environmental learning to life in their classrooms.
Every teacher trained represents hundreds of opportunities for children to explore, question, and build meaningful connections with the natural world. Together, we're laying the foundations for a generation of young environmental stewards – one classroom at a time.

A special thank you to Joni Pierce-van Zyl, Made Better Together Foundation's Social Impact Director, for facilitating another incredible day of learning, connection, and conservation.
We're also deeply grateful to the Table Mountain Fund, administered by WWF South Africa, for making this three-year initiative possible and helping us bring WILD HEARTS to communities across the Western Cape.

Today we're celebrating World African Painted Dog Day – a chance to look beyond the mask and meet one of Africa's most endangered and misunderstood animals.
Through our WILD HEARTS program, every mask made by a child becomes something bigger: a conversation about teamwork, courage, and why every pack deserves a future.

Connecting Communities to Conservation
Barrydale/Montagu | Training Session 1 Complete

What an incredible way to begin this three-year journey. We were thrilled to welcome our first group of teachers from the Barrydale and Montagu region as the first educators to experience Made Better Together's WILD HEARTS Environmental Education Programme through the Connecting Communities to Conservation project.

Over the next three years, the project will unfold across two regions – Barrydale/Montagu and the Southern Peninsula – equipping teachers with 18 hands-on environmental education lessons designed to spark curiosity, nurture a love for nature, and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

In Year One, we'll train 16 teachers and reach 400 children. By the end of the project, we'll have trained 32 teachers and reached 1,800 children, creating more than 32,400 meaningful environmental learning experiences in classrooms where they matter most.

A heartfelt thank you to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve for being such incredible collaborative partners – for providing a beautiful training venue, organising refreshments, and for the invaluable conservation knowledge that Pascal Swanepoel - Sanbona’s Community Initiatives Coordinator - shared throughout the day, bringing the learning to life.
A special thank you to Joni Pierce-van Zyl, Made Better Together's Social Impact Director, for facilitating this first WILD HEARTS training and sharing the programme with such passionate educators.
