๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’ Beep baa, beep baa! The fire engine is on its way! ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ

Just in time for Wildfire Community Preparedness Day this Saturday, we are excited to share our brand new WILD HEARTS Wild Fire Lesson for young children.

Have a look at how we teach little learners about the power of wild fires โ€“ the devastation they can cause, but also the important role they play in nature, helping certain seeds open and new life begin.

And letโ€™s be honestโ€ฆ what could be more exciting than fire engines, firefighters, sirens, and a lesson full of action? ๐Ÿš’

Our WILD HEARTS Wild Fire Lesson is available directly from us, and can also be found on the Sustainable Schools Hub by Nature Connect.

Teaching children today helps build safer, wiser communities tomorrow. โค๏ธ

What is WILD HEARTS? It is a free, fun, ready-to-use environmental education programme for young children, featuring 45 themed lessons linked to international environmental days. Designed with ELDAs and CAPS alignment in mind, each lesson includes step-by-step guidance for easy implementation, with all printable resources included. Our new Wild Fire Lesson also comes with 3 additional extension activities, while the full programme offers an incredible 108 bonus resources to enrich learning even further.

Earlier this week we celebrated International Penguin Day โ€“ a special moment to reflect on one of South Africaโ€™s most loved seabirds, the African Penguin, whose wild population is now under severe threat.

At Made Better Together Foundation, we believe conservation starts with education. Our WILD HEARTS African Penguin lesson helps preschool children discover these incredible birds through fun, meaningful, age-appropriate learning.

This free curriculum resource forms part of our growing WILD HEARTS programme, featuring 45 lesson plans and 108 additional activities designed to connect young children with the natural world.

Resources are available directly from Made Better Together Foundation and are also downloadable via the Sustainable Schools Hub by Nature Connect.

๐ŸŽฅ Watch the video to step inside the lesson plan and see how learning comes to life page by page.

By teaching little hearts today, we help protect wild hearts tomorrow.

Sustainability isnโ€™t applied at the end. Itโ€™s built in, together. ๐Ÿ’š

In remote environments, every decision shapes impact over time. Footprint, materials and longevity are resolved through early collaboration and shared intent.

At Tenthouse Structures, we work closely with partners to design lightly, build responsibly and ensure our structures are built to last. Because the best outcomes for people and planet are always made better together.

Happy Earth Day 2026!

This year, the world comes together to celebrate our shared home and the collective power we hold to protect it.

At Made Better Together, weโ€™re reminded that real change begins with connection โ€“ to nature, to each other, and to the next generation. Through our WILD HEARTS Environmental Education Program, we are nurturing young custodians of the Earth, inspiring curiosity, compassion, and a lifelong love for the natural world. ๐Ÿ’š

The planet doesnโ€™t need a handful of people doing sustainability perfectly. It needs millions of us doing it imperfectly, but consistently.

Together, we are raising a generation that will not only love the Earth โ€“ but protect it.

Term 2 is officially underway, and so is our WILD HEARTS training:

This term brings 6 exciting themes, and weโ€™ve already kicked off in-person training on the first three: Bat, Leopard, and Bee ๐Ÿฆ‡๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ

Our sessions at IThemba School are hands-on, practical, and explorative โ€“ unpacking every part of the lesson together. From meaningful discussions and engaging visuals to interactive games, themed tabletop activities, and creative artwork, teachers experience the lessons just as the children will.

Working in small groups, weโ€™re equipping new teachers at iThemba, now in their second year of implementing the WILD HEARTS curriculum. Watching these teachers grow in confidence as they connect with the content is always something special.

Hereโ€™s to another term of nurturing curious minds and growing young nature lovers.

In the quiet of Earth Hour, we remember โ€“ we are part of nature, not apart from it.
Switch off your lights from 20:30โ€“21:30, and give an hour back to the Earth โ€“ whether through stillness, connection, or a small act of care for nature.

Grateful to be part of the Western Cape Environmental Education Forum โ€“ and for the connections built here through shared support, insight, and learning.
Yesterday marked the first in-person WCEEF meeting of the year at the Dome in Green Point Urban Park, Cape Town,
It was a valuable session reflecting on the forumโ€™s strategy, vision, and direction, with open conversations around strengths, challenges, and where the WCEEF is heading.

Thank you to the leadership โ€“ Lindie Buirski and Khuthala Swanepoel โ€“ for guiding the space. We really appreciate the depth of experience and knowledge within this forum.

Term 1 WILD HEARTS Environmental Education training completed with the incredible team at MASICORP.

MASICORP was one of the original WILD HEARTS pilot schools in 2023, and their teachers have been delivering the lessons independently for the past two years. This term we returned to train the new educators who recently joined the Grade 00 team.

Together we explored Wetlands, Pangolins, Lions, Forests and Sharks โ€“ building knowledge, confidence, and excitement to bring these lessons to young learners.

When educators are inspired, children become curious.
And curious children become the next generation of conservationists. ๐Ÿ’š

Celebrating Sustainability Champions in Western Cape Schools!
Last week we had the privilege of attending the Sustainable Schools Awards Ceremony in Cape Town, as a proud partner of the Nature Connect Sustainable Schools Programme.

The ceremony celebrated the incredible work being done by schools across the Western Cape to embed sustainability into everyday learning โ€“ from biodiversity and water stewardship to waste reduction, energy awareness, and community upliftment.

A heartfelt congratulations to all the schools recognised, including:
St Maryโ€™s RC Primary School โ€“ Most Sustainable School in the Western Cape
Monala Primary School โ€“ Most Sustainable School in South Africa
Bel Porto School โ€“ Best Progress for a New School
Harmony Primary School โ€“ Most Improved School
John Graham Primary School โ€“ Outstanding Eco Club

Regional focus area winners in the Western Cape included:
Pinelands High School โ€“ Biodiversity Network
Parkwood Primary School โ€“ Health & Well-being
Silvermine Academy โ€“ Energy & Climate Action
St James RC Primary School โ€“ Marine & Coast
Sweet Valley Primary School โ€“ Water & Sanitation
St Maryโ€™s RC Primary School โ€“ Production, Consumption & Waste
St Maryโ€™s RC Primary School โ€“ Community & Social Responsibility

These schools are showing how education can inspire meaningful environmental action and empower learners to care for their communities and natural world.

As partners of the Sustainable Schools Programme, the Made Better Together Foundation is grateful that our WILD HEARTS Environmental Education resources are hosted on the Sustainability Schools Hub, where they are freely available to educators across the network. Through this collaboration, schools can access additional learning materials designed to inspire young environmental stewards.

Thank you to the Sustainable Schools team for recognising partners with certificates of appreciation and for building such a powerful community of educators and organisations working together for the planet.

๐ŸŒ If your school is not yet part of the Sustainable Schools community, we encourage you to join.
Together we can empower the next generation to explore, understand, and care for the wild places of our planet.
