South Africa’s unemployment crisis continues to paint a stark picture of the challenges facing young people. According to Stats SA, the unemployment rate among South Africans aged 15–24 stands at 60.9%, while unemployment among 25–34-year-olds stands at 40.6%, limiting opportunities for many.

On this , also known as the Day of the African Child, we hear from some of our fellows on what needs to be done to address the challenges facing young people.

Albinism affects approximately 1 in every 4,000 people living in South Africa. Studies show that this genetic condition results in a lack of melanin in the hair, skin, and eyes, causing increased vulnerability to the sun and bright light. As a result, most people with albinism are visually impaired and are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer. People with albinism in South Africa face discrimination and barriers to accessing healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.

On , our fellow, Dr Carel Masemola, who focuses on advancing equitable access to quality eye care for underserved communities, notes that people with albinism continue to "face a significant barrier in accessing the eye care services and assistive devices they need to participate fully in our society," and that we must ensure that they "have access to the services, support, and opportunities they need to thrive."

“It’s a game changer,” says our fellow Siyabonga Nzimande, a public health professional, as South Africa rolls out Lenacapavir as an additional HIV prevention option administered twice a year as PrEP.
However, he cautions that "being on PrEP does not still speak about preventing and stopping STIs. We still need a widespread conversation around STI's in our communities."

Over the weekend, President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched the rollout of Lenacapavir (LEN), a new twice-yearly injectable for HIV prevention, describing it as a "turning point in our nation's fight against HIV." The Department of Health says LEN "is expected to expand HIV prevention choices and improve adherence, especially among vulnerable priority groups, including adolescent girls and young women, s*x workers, and men who have s*x with men, among others."

Reacting to this breakthrough, our CEO, Sipho Mthathi, said: "Thank you and well done to the people on our continent and across the world on whose bodies this drug was tested and to the researchers who stewarded its discovery..."

We are looking for an external facilitator to conduct a Board evaluation that is both governance-compliant and appropriately forward-looking—one that is proportionate, fair, and rooted in the realities of Tekano’s current moment.

The evaluation serves two complementary purposes: to assess governance health in line with corporate governance best practice and the Tekano Memorandum of Incorporation, and to assess strategic orientation in relation to the 2026–2036 Strategy.

LISTEN: Air pollution remains a major health threat, with direct consequences for communities across South Africa. A study by the University of Cape Town found that, in Cape Town alone, approximately 1.9 million people (40.3% of the population) are exposed to high or very high levels of air pollution. The findings show that a significant proportion of the city's population lives in high- to very-high-risk areas, particularly in informal settlements and historically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Residents in these areas face multiple challenges, including poor housing conditions, limited access to healthcare, and exposure to pollution.

On this , our fellow Xolile Ndzoyi, an environmental justice advocate from Gugulethu, is calling for action to ensure clean air, safe spaces, and dignity for all.

The recent Stats SA, UNICEF South Africa, and Social Policy Research Institute report reveals that more than half of South Africa’s children (57.3%) live in multidimensional poverty, lacking access to essential needs such as nutritious food, healthcare, education, safe housing, protection, and basic services.
As Child Protection Week draws to a close, our fellow Noluyolo Ngomani, a media practitioner and children’s rights advocate, is calling for every child to be safe, respected, and given opportunities to thrive.

“On this , we honour the resilience, courage, and leadership of s*x workers who continue to fight for dignity, safety, health, and human rights. Across South Africa, s*x workers continue to experience violence, stigma, discrimination, and economic insecurity, with limited access to justice, healthcare, and protection,” says our fellow, Dudu Dlamini, an advocate for the decriminalisation of s*x work.

Despite years of advocacy, s*x work remains criminalised in South Africa.

WATCH: South Africa’s hunger crisis continues to deepen as rising food prices, unemployment, and inequality force many families to skip meals and sacrifice proper nutrition. The Eastern Cape remains one of the provinces most affected by food insecurity, with communities facing particularly harsh conditions as hunger and malnutrition continue to affect countless households and children. At the same time, persistent challenges such as water scarcity, recurring droughts, and the province’s dry climate make it difficult for farmers to grow food and sustain livelihoods.

Despite these hardships, communities are taking meaningful steps to confront food insecurity and build resilience. On this , we share the story of the community of Willowvale, our fellow Bakhusele Mathupa, organisations, and government institutions, one of many examples of how people across the country are coming together to fight hunger and work towards a more food-secure future.
