July 2024 marks the second anniversary of the passing of Mr Buyile Sangolekhaya Matiwane. Buyile was a trailblazer who led various student formations notably the Student Representative Council of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, the Black Management Forum Students Chapter, and the South African Students Congress at its branch, provincial and national levels respectively.

To honour Buyile’s memory, the Luchulumanco Nanto Foundation and the Buyile Matiwane Foundation , joined forces in 2023 to launch the Inaugural Buyile Matiwane Annual Lecture, which was hosted virtually and broadcast live on Facebook. As the two Foundations, we believe that Buyile, dedicated his life to the emancipation of the African child through education as he was a firm education believer, who fought for the doors of education to open for all, particularly the black and disadvantaged.

The Lecture Series seeks to initiate dialogues on significant social issues – often about difficult subjects – to address the challenges we face in modern-day society.

The 2024 instalment will be held on Saturday, 13 July 2024, at 13h00, in the Bellville Campus, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, under the theme Advancing Human Rights in South Africa and the World.

Today we commemorate the courage and sacrifice of the Soweto students, who stood up to injustice at great personal risk. It is a reminder of the important role that young people have played in South Africa's history and their continuing potential to shape the future.

This day is not only a day of remembrance but also a day to celebrate South Africa's youth. South Africa has a vibrant and diverse youth population, and their energy, creativity, and passion are essential for its future progress.

South Africa's youth face many challenges, including unemployment, inequality, and access to education. This day also serves as a call to action to address these challenges and invest in the nation's future. A luta continua.
