Landsdiens / Land Service SA The Land Service is an environment oriented youth movement which is accessible to everyone. A goal for diligence forms part of the Land Service.

We strive to improve the loves for, as well as the protection of the environment and the natural resources. Land Service is a South African youth movement and it celebrated its 100th year of existence in 2014. The movement brings together kids from all sorts of life & give them a safe environment where they can be themselves and where they can grow! It is one place where there is unconditional acc

eptance from your peers. We provide an environment where the pupil can develop the following skills, to name just a few:

* Social skills
* Self-confidence
* Appreciation and preserving nature

WELKOM TERUG / WELCOME BACK

'n Nuwe kwartaal bring nuwe geleenthede om te leer, te groei en te dien. Ons hoop elke Landsdienslid keer terug met nuwe energie, entoesiasme en 'n hart om 'n verskil te maak in hul skool en gemeenskap.

A new term means new opportunities to learn, grow and serve. We hope every Land Service member returns refreshed, motivated and ready to make a positive difference in their school and community.

Would you believe a jar of Vicks VapoRub could save a baby bear's life? In the early 1980s, Pennsylvania bear biologist Gary Alt refused to accept that orphaned black bear cubs had only two grim options: a cage or a grave. He believed they deserved a real chance at a wild life, raised by a real bear mother. So he set out to prove it was possible.

His first breakthrough felt almost too simple to work. Alt quietly slipped an orphaned cub beside a sleeping mother bear in her winter den, then waited. When spring came, she emerged with one extra cub, nursing and protecting it as if it had been hers all along. It seemed like the answer had been found.

But nature had other plans. When Alt tried the same trick with a mother who was awake, disaster struck. She caught the unfamiliar scent instantly and killed the cub. One success, one heartbreak. What was the difference? The answer would change everything.

Alt refused to give up. Determined to crack the problem, he made a discovery that sounds almost too ordinary to be genius: dab a little Vicks VapoRub on the mother's nose, or on the cub itself, and mask the unfamiliar scent just long enough. By the time her sense of smell returned to normal, the orphan had already become family in her eyes and heart.

It worked. And it kept working. The technique spread far beyond Pennsylvania, adopted by wildlife agencies across North America as a trusted, humane way to save orphaned cubs. For forty years, biologists in bear states across the country have relied on Alt's method to give vulnerable cubs a second chance.

Even today, orphaned cubs are still placed with wild foster mothers using techniques inspired by his work. Countless young bears have grown up exactly where they belong—free, wild, and loved by a mother who never questioned whether they were truly hers.
