This community upliftment project seeks to breathe new life into unwanted waste materials, that is, the goal of this initiative is to incorporate these unwanted materials in the construction of a new Aftercare Centre. In so doing, simultaneously clearing streets of litter, reducing landfill and providing an educational facility for a community in need. The above mentioned community refers to Walme
r Township, Port Elizabeth. After interaction with members in this community, it has become apparent that the resident pre-primary schools are in desperate need of support. Penguins Learn + Play Centre hosts 55 children – between the ages of two and six – that receive care and attention in a double-roomed shack structure located behind the residence of one of the teachers. The children receive instruction in English, standing them in good stead for their eventual junior school career. The proposed building will be constructed out of a combination of eco-bricks and concrete. The eco-brick itself is a 2ℓ Coke bottle stuffed with compacted plastic waste. Through the gathering of eco-bricks and other resources, we wish to build a wide community of givers. This network will collectively embody enthusiasm, effort and a positive attitude, and also stand by and support the school after construction is completed. We value collaboration; an open-source structure has been adopted inviting participation in related activities and the decision making moments. To put it another way, we want you to give of yourself in a way that suits your lifestyle.
