In an interview with Voice of the Cape on 21 May 2026, our Child Care and Protection Social Worker, Mazeeda Karani, speaks about child protection, community responsibility, and the urgent need for safer environments for children.

As we mark the end of Child Protection Week, this conversation reminds us that protecting children is not the responsibility of one sector alone. It requires awareness, accountability, and action from all of us.

On the last day of Child Protection Week, we reflect on what we have spoken about over the past few days regarding child sexual violence.

In this video, our Child Care and Protection Social Worker, Mazeeda, explains that child sexual violence is not only a problem of individuals, but also of what we choose to see, what we ignore, and what we normalise.

Child protection requires courage in practice. We cannot afford to only recognise violence after it has escalated. We have to act earlier and we have to act together.

In this video, our Child Care and Protection Social Worker, Mazeeda, explains what to do when a child discloses sexual violence.

This Child Protection Week we will be discussing various topics relating to child sexual violence.

In this video, our Child Care and Protection Social Worker, Mazeeda, explains why children often do not disclose sexual violence.

Silence is often shaped by fear, pressure, manipulation, confusion, and the fear of not being believed. Some children may also not realise that what is happening to them is wrong or have the language to describe it.

This Child Protection Week we will be discussing various topics relating to child sexual violence.

In this video, our Child Care and Protection Social Worker, Mazeeda, explains that sexual violence against children can also happen between peers.

Child-on-child sexual violence is real and is often not recognised early enough, especially when harmful behaviours are dismissed as exploration.
