Youth aging out of care is less likely to have a high school diploma, to pursue higher education or to earn a living wage. They are more likely to experience economic hardships, to be homeless, to struggle with mental health challenges and to become involved with the criminal justice system. O Grace Land is a residential independent living program for youth (girls) aging out of care making the tra
nsition from living in children home to living independently and self-sustaining. Our target group is the youth (girls) in care at the age of eighteen. For this group, services are designed to facilitate the transition to adulthood. The UNICEF South Africa Annual Report 2012 reported that many abused, neglected and abandoned children land up in children’s homes. Statistics on these children in institutional care are not complete, but it is known that there are 345 registered children’s homes in South Africa, looking after some 21,000 children (UNICEF South Africa Annual Report 2012). There is no support system for children once they reach the age of 18 and leave formal care and there is a scarcity of alternative care programs suitable for older adolescents. O Grace Land is a non-profit (NPO) organization that aims not to empower the youth (girls), yet give them the tools and guidance to empower themselves. Especially girls transitioning from care into independency and to equip them in a manner that allows them to contribute to their own and the nation’s growth and development. Operating in Cape Town South Africa and founded/lead by Philani Zama who responded by the birth of O Grace Land which is a residential independent living program for youth (girls) aging out of care. O Grace Land seeks to:
• provide residential independent living program for girls aging out of care (18 – 22)
• provide a safe place and disciplined environment for youth and the community
• provide activities, training, mentoring programs, and other programs that will enhance the lives of the youth and community
• provide an unbiased and on spot support and information for the youth and community
We hope to do this and more through emotion intelligence, building each and every youth from the inside out.
