HELP : Homework - Enrichment - Lifeskills - Programme Anna-Marie noticed that the children have no self-esteem and definitely no confidence. Morale was low.

HELP – Homework Enrichment Life Skills Programme, is a literacy and numeracy programme with a strong focus on building up the children’s self-esteem, confidence, respect for themselves and each other. HELP (Homework Enrichment Life Skills Program) was created
by Anna-Marie - a mother, who albeit not a teacher, is passionate
about education: especially education for those less fortunate than
her

child. Growing more and more concerned about the rapidly
declining education level which affects all levels of South African
society and of course the future of South Africa, Anna-Marie felt
that it was time to take action. After volunteering at Capricorn Primary School for a couple of
months, she realized that the assistance the children are
receiving for 6 months, 1 hour per week, is far from satisfactory. She “designed” a program for the children based on her experience with the above elements but most importantly, encouraging the children to trust her – every time reverting back to “how would I like to be treated” and making sure that not yet another adult is letting them down. Based on the principle that the children are little people with their own identity, the holistic approach becomes more and more apparent. In March 2011 the proposal was submitted to the school, the Board of Educators and to some members of the Western Cape Education Department - the green light was given and an afternoon classroom was made available soon after HELP received approval from these authorities.

Springfield Convent Learners Continue Their Support of HELP

HELP is grateful to two former Springfield Convent learners who recently responded to our call for assistance in covering books for the library we are creating at Harmony Primary School. Their willingness to give of their time reflects the long-standing relationship between Springfield Convent Senior School and HELP.

Since 2014, Springfield learners have been completing their community outreach hours at HELP. From Monday to Thursday, learners spend approximately 40 minutes after school assisting children with homework and, once completed, engaging them in educational games that make learning fun and interactive.

The support from the Springfield community also extends to the Foundation Phase programme, where Springfield moms assist with one-on-one reading sessions in the mornings. They also participate in special literacy celebrations, including World Read Aloud Day, helping to foster a love of reading among learners.

We value this ongoing partnership and thank the Springfield community for their continued commitment to education and literacy development.

What an awesome initiative.

Good Things Guy has launched a dedicated “4 Kids” section, where real South African good news stories are transformed into storybook-style adventures that younger readers can understand, enjoy, and grow up with.

From inspiring people to incredible animals and everyday acts of kindness, the idea is simple: take real moments happening across the country and reimagine them in a way that sparks curiosity, imagination, and hope in children.

Some stories will be adapted from the archives, others will come straight from breaking good news, but all of them will be rooted in real South African life. No fiction. Just real stories told in a way that feels magical for young readers.

A weekly kid-friendly story will also be added to the Good Things Guy newsletter, making it easier for families and classrooms to share positive, local storytelling together.

At its heart, this is about getting kids excited about reading again… while helping them see that kindness, community, and good news are happening all around them, every single day.

At HELP, we’re building environmental awareness in a hands-on, creative way 🌿

The learners explored the importance of trees through a fun, themed project. They created a beautiful tree using crushed, dried leaves, experimented with leaf rubbings, and coloured in pictures of animals that make use of trees.

A simple activity, but a meaningful step towards understanding and caring for the environment 🌍

On the 23 April the world celebrates World Book Day, to remind us of the power of books to spark the imagination, open doors to new worlds, and build empathy while equipping readers with essential life skills. At HELP, we are committed to championing the written word by creating a vibrant reading environment for learners at Harmony Primary. This year World Book Day was celebrated by issuing the first books with the newly implemented Prolib computerised library system—bringing us one step closer to making reading accessible, engaging, and central to every learner’s journey.

✨📚 Celebrating National Tell a Fairy Tale Day! 👑✨

In celebration of National Tell a Fairy Tale Day on Thursday, 26th February, the entire month of February was dedicated to the magical world of fairy tales!

Fairy tale–themed picture books was made available for learners to read at break times. The stories were used to spark the learners imagination and creativity.

Learners were given the outline of a classic ballgown and encouraged to design and decorate it using their own creative flair. The finished gowns were proudly displayed on the wall, transforming the space into a magical gallery! 👗✨

The Grade 7 learners shared fairy tales with the Grade 3 learners on Thursday, 26th February. It was a heartwarming experience that truly brought the magic of storytelling to life.

National Tell a Fairy Tale Day was fantastic opportunity to use books to spark imagination, creativity, and connection across grades! 🌟📖

Neville Sherman, a retired school principal and HELP volunteer, is bringing his passion for education into the classroom by teaching creative writing, using the classic story The Hobbit as inspiration. The learners listen as the story is read to them, and then they create their own original pieces based on what they’ve heard.

It’s a wonderful way to spark imagination, build confidence, and develop writing skills — all while enjoying a timeless adventure story. Thank you, Neville, for making such a meaningful difference!
