Rhinoprotect

Rhinoprotect www.rhinoprotect.org RhinoProtect was founded by Damian Vergnaud, owner of Inverdoorn Game Reserve and Iziba Safari Lodge. at Trinity in Cape Town in 2012.

The initiative is made up of three cornerstones within the framework of rhino conservation, the first being its revolutionary horn treatment. Developed as a reaction to attacks on rhinos of neighbouring game reserves, the treatment involves injecting a barium-laced dye into the horn of the rhino which colours it internally, makes it X-ray detectable and unfit for human consumption. The three rhin

os at Inverdoorn had their horns injected in an effort to protect them. After the success of this method, RhinoProtect sought to roll it out across South Africa which led to the protection of more rhinos. Secondly, RhinoProtect’s rescue of two calves prompted the foundation of a rhino orphanage at Inverdoorn. The pair lost their mothers to poachers and were relocated to the Western Cape game reserve to provide them with a safe, new home. By establishing an orphanage RhinoProtect seeks to further their aims to include saving rhinos, rescuing more calves who have been orphaned due to poaching. The third cornerstone involves the global community. Seeking the care and concern of people through media and events, RhinoProtect hopes to raise awareness for the rhino’s plight by bringing the struggle to the people. To purport this, they held the concert Stand Up! The event featured legendary reggae band The Wailers and South African acts The Rudimentals, Comet and Mix n Blend. Most of the world’s rhino population is found in South Africa, making the county the primary focus in the battle. One of the keys to saving the rhino is spreading the word and actively actively seeking solutions in order to save South Africa’s natural heritage. Through their pioneering efforts, RhinoProtect hopes to help curb the terrible increase in rhino poaching and horn trade.
