A LIFE WITHOUT STRUGGLE IN SA IS ACHIEVABLE

The Decent Standard of Living (DSL) is a measure of what ordinary South Africans think are important issues to enable anyone to live a decent life.

Launched in November 2018, the DSL research is the result of a multi-year study on understanding inequality in South Africa and is conducted by three research organisations, Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII), Southern Africa Social Policy Research Institute (SASPRI) and Labour Research Service (LRS).

The DSL is the first attempt to quantify in monetary terms the resources required for a socially derived standard of living using the Socially Perceived Necessities (SPNs) approach. Research emerging from the study reveals that an overwhelming majority of South Africans believe that the government should be focussing on improving the lives of people living on the margins of the economy.
