๐Ÿ“ข COMMUNITY AWARENESS: BLIKKIESDORP ๐Ÿ“ข

Equilibrium Centre took child protection month + substance abuse awareness straight to Blikkiesdorp this week for International Substance Abuse Awareness.

We equipped parents, caregivers & community members with:

1. Warning signs to spot child abuse, neglect & substance use early or that a child is living with substance use within the home.

2. Safety toolkit for children - practical steps kids can use to stay safe.

3. Your legal duty: Section 110 of the Childrenโ€™s Act 38 of 2005 + Sections 32 & 33 of the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act 70 of 2008. The law is clear: If you suspect a child is abused or using substances, you MUST report it.

4. Where to report what: SAPS, Department of Social Development, CDC's, Equilibrium and other relevant role players.

Protecting children isnโ€™t optional. Itโ€™s the law + itโ€™s our duty. Silence puts kids at risk. Reporting saves lives.

With 9 dedicated care workers based at both our Elsies River and Delft offices, weโ€™re on the ground every day - protecting children, supporting families, and strengthening schools.

At Equilibrium, Child Protection Month is more than a moment of awareness โ€” it is a reminder of the children we encounter who carry burdens far too heavy for their age.

Behind every intervention is a child exposed to violence, a parent struggling with substance use, or a family attempting to survive within unsafe and unstable conditions.

Our response is grounded in prevention, early intervention, psychosocial support, parenting programmes, and substance abuse services, strengthened through collaboration with schools, government departments, and community structures.

Beyond structured programmes, we often stand in the gap โ€” holding space for healing, safety, and hope where systems are strained and families are overwhelmed.

Child protection is not confined to a calendar event; it is a daily commitment to safeguarding the most vulnerable in our communities.

My Invisible Backpack ๐ŸŽ’

One of the most impactful illustrations during our matric motivation session was "My Invisible Backpack." Learners were encouraged to reflect on the invisible burdens they carry every dayโ€”peer pressure, substance use, procrastination, negative influences, fear of failure, and other distractions.

The activity demonstrated how these unnecessary weights can make the journey to success much heavier. Just as a backpack becomes difficult to carry when overloaded, our lives become harder when we focus on things that distract us from our goals. The challenge to our matrics was simple: What can you remove from your backpack to make room for your dreams and future success?

Our Social Work Team had the privilege of facilitating a Matric Motivation Session at Roosendal High School as learners prepare for their upcoming examinations.

Using the theme, "Diamonds Are Formed Under Pressure โ€“ What Will You Become?", we encouraged learners to view the challenges and pressures of matric not as obstacles, but as opportunities for growth, resilience, and success.

The session focused on:
โœ… The impact of substance use on academic performance and future goals
โœ… Navigating peer influence and making positive choices
โœ… Effective time management strategies
โœ… Overcoming procrastination
โœ… Practical study tips and exam preparation techniques

Through interactive activities, honest discussions, and words of encouragement, learners were reminded that pressure can either break us or shape us. Just as diamonds are formed under immense pressure, they too have the potential to emerge stronger, wiser, and ready for the future.

To all the Matrics: Believe in yourselves, stay focused on your goals, make healthy choices, and remember that your hard work today is an investment in your tomorrow.
