The Difference Between Making Christian Converts and Making Disciples

One of the most pressing questions in Christian ministry today is whether the Church is fulfilling the Great Commission. Jesus’ instruction in Matthew 28:19-20 is clear: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Yet, there is often a tendency to prioritize making converts over nurturing disciples. While both are essential, the distinction between the two has profound implications for the Church’s mission.

Conversion: A Powerful Beginning

Conversion represents the transformative moment when an individual acknowledges Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. It is a declaration of faith, a turning from sin, and a step into new life. Paul encapsulates this in Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” This pivotal decision is celebrated in heaven, as Scripture tells us that there is great rejoicing over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:7).

However, if conversion is treated as the end goal, it risks becoming a shallow milestone. Without intentional follow-up, new believers may lack the grounding necessary to withstand challenges to their faith. The initial spark of salvation needs to be nurtured to grow into a resilient and enduring faith.

Discipleship: A Daily Commitment

Discipleship goes beyond the initial step of conversion. It is an ongoing process of growth, rooted in a commitment to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. In Luke 9:23, Christ lays out the cost of discipleship: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” This is not a one-time decision but a lifelong journey of surrender and obedience.

True discipleship requires more than attendance at Sunday services. It involves learning and applying God’s Word, living in community with other believers, and cultivating a faith that actively reflects Christ’s character. Discipleship equips believers to face trials with steadfastness and to serve as ambassadors of the gospel in their daily lives.

The Core Differences

Focus: Conversion centres on a decision for Christ, while discipleship involves ongoing transformation into His likeness.

Depth: Converts may embrace the gospel initially, but disciples delve deeper into its truths, integrating them into every facet of life.

Impact: Conversion marks the start of faith, but discipleship produces fruit that glorifies God (John 15:8).

Community: While conversion can happen in isolation, discipleship thrives in fellowship, where believers encourage and challenge one another (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Mission: Converts enter the faith, but disciples are equipped to make more disciples, multiplying the impact of the gospel.

The Church’s Responsibility

The Church is called to strike a balance between evangelism and discipleship. Evangelism sows the seeds of faith, but discipleship nurtures them to maturity. Churches must resist the temptation to measure success solely by the number of conversions and instead prioritize the deeper work of disciple-making.

Practical steps include offering sound biblical teaching, developing mentoring relationships, and creating opportunities for believers to serve and grow in their faith. The goal is not simply to fill pews but to cultivate a vibrant, active body of Christ that lives out the gospel.

Conclusion

Making converts is essential to the Church’s mission, but it is only the beginning. True faith is evidenced by a life transformed and committed to the teachings of Christ. The Great Commission calls for the making of disciples—believers who walk closely with Jesus, grow in their faith, and disciple others in turn.
