AMASOJA: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN đ±
On Heritage Day, weâre looking back at a part of our communityâs story: the youth who came together to create Amasoja Leadership Initiative in Gugulethu. đ
In 2016, a group of youth shared a vision: to create a safer community, free from drugs and crime.
They called their initiative Amasoja Youth Initiative (AYI) â an initiative BY the youth, FOR the youth.
With support from Contribution To Opportunities (CTO), Amasoja developed into a youth-led initiative focused on leadership, personal growth and creating opportunities within the community.
Through workshops, mentorship and practical experience, members developed their skills and confidence while taking increasing responsibility for their own activities.
Over the following years, Amasoja organised township cinema, flea markets and activities for children and youth. Members also took part in leadership training, excursions and community projects, while supporting each other, taking steps towards education and employment.
From after-school activities and gardening projects to human rights events, Amasoja created spaces for learning, connection and positive change.
A NEW CHAPTER âš
The experiences, relationships and lessons from Amasoja Youth Initiative became an important source of inspiration for a new chapter.
In 2025, CTO and Call 2 Care began developing Amasoja Leadership Initiative â a new leadership programme that launched in 2026 with funding from Sida Partnership Forum
The programme builds on Amasojaâs original spirit: supporting youth to grow as individuals, develop their leadership and contribute to their communities.
đŹ Our story continues! In an upcoming reel, weâll introduce the new Amasoja Leadership Initiative and the youth, coordinators and partners bringing it to life.
Happy Heritage Day, South Africa!
Belonging. Growth. Empowerment.
