Today, 15 August, we honour the Dormition of the Theotokos - the ‘falling asleep’ of Mary, the Divine Mother. 🌸
There is something so tender in the Orthodox understanding of this day: that she did not simply die, but fell asleep in God. Tradition tells of her tomb later being found empty, her body taken into heaven, with only the sweetness and fragrance of flowers remaining behind.
Perhaps this is why I find it so beautiful that, sometimes, in moments when her presence feels very near, there can suddenly be the scent of flowers where no flowers are to be found. A quiet reminder: Mother is near.
Archetypally, we are forever the child, and she the nurturing Mother, the one we can turn to when life becomes too heavy, and also when life becomes so beautiful that we simply need someone with whom to share our joy.
Yes, we can always go directly to God. But there is something wonderfully human and almost playfully sacred about asking the Mother to whisper in the ear of her Son on our behalf. And somehow, as children know, a mother has a beautiful way of being heard. 🤍
Today we remember her tenderness, her strength, her protection and her eternal presence.
Most Holy Theotokos, pray for us.
Divine Mother, remain close to us always. 🌹
