SA Children's Home / SA Kinderhuis

SA Children's Home / SA Kinderhuis The Children’s Home is a constituted Non-Profit Welfare Organisation.

Our History

The South African Children’s Home was the first welfare institution established in South Africa. Originally known as the ‘Orphan House’ it was founded in 1808 by Mrs Moller, a wealthy Dutch widow, who was assisted in this task by members of the Groote Kerk and the Evangelical Church, two of the oldest churches in South Africa. Mrs Moller dedicated much of her life to establishing the

Children’s Home and upon her death she graciously donated the bulk of her estate to her beloved orphanage. The SA Children’s Home was originally housed on Cape Town’s Long Street before moving to the suburb of Gardens in 1923. Forty-five years later a modern Children’s Home was erected on the same site and this is where the Children’s Home still stands today. Now more than 200 years later, the Children’s Home continues its care for children by providing a secure, friendly, homely environment for its family of 44 boys and girls.

💙 Happy Father’s Day 💙

Today, we celebrate and honour all the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors, and male supporters who make such a meaningful difference in the lives of our children.

Many of our children are blessed to experience the kindness, encouragement, and unwavering support of men who choose to show up, care deeply, and invest in their futures. Whether through your time, generosity, guidance, or simply being a positive role model, you help our children feel safe, valued, and loved.

We are also especially grateful for the wonderful men on our staff. Through their patience, compassion, and daily presence, they provide stability, guidance, and encouragement to the children in our care. They lead by example, celebrate milestones, offer support during difficult moments, and remind our children that they are worthy of love, respect, and every opportunity to thrive. Their influence reaches far beyond their job descriptions, and we are deeply thankful for the difference they make each day.

The impact you all make reaches far beyond what words can express. A listening ear, a warm smile, a word of encouragement, or an act of kindness can help shape a child’s confidence and remind them that they are not alone.

To every man who stands alongside our Home and our children – thank you. Thank you for caring. Thank you for believing in them. Thank you for being part of their journey and for helping to create brighter futures filled with hope.

From all of us at SA Children’s Home, and especially from the children whose lives you touch, we wish you a very Happy Father’s Day. 💙

A heartfelt thank you to Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel and the Alive Foundation South Africa 🧡

Some donations meet a practical need. Others restore something far deeper.

Their gift of sanitary pads carries with it dignity, safety, and quiet relief for our girls 🌿

It means no child must feel anxious about something so natural. It means no missed school days, no shame, and no silent worry carried alone.

For the girls at SA Children’s Home, this is more than support. It is the message that they are seen, valued, and cared for in the most tender and human way 💛

In moments that are often too difficult to put into words, this kind of care speaks loudly: you matter, your comfort matters, your future matters.

To everyone involved, thank you for turning compassion into action and for reminding our girls that they are never alone 🧡

💛🌍 World Day Against Child Labour 🌍💛

Some children fall asleep tonight with tired eyes, full bellies and the soft safety of a bed that feels like home.

Others fall asleep with aching bodies.

Not from play. Not from laughter.
But from work they were never meant to do.

They are children who have had childhood taken piece by piece, too quietly for the world to notice, too quickly for them to understand why their days feel heavier than their years. Small hands that should be holding crayons are instead holding tools. Young hearts that should be learning wonder are instead learning survival.

And here in the Western Cape, almost 1 in 5 children aged 15 to 17 are economically active. Behind that number are real lives. Real children. Real names. Each one carrying a story that rarely gets told out loud.

A child should not know what it means to be exhausted before they understand what it means to be free.
A child should not learn responsibility before they have been allowed to learn joy.
A child should not have their innocence traded away for the sake of survival.

At SA Children's Home, we hold onto a belief that feels simple, but is anything but in practice:

Childhood is not something a child earns. It is something every child deserves.

It should look like scraped knees from running too fast outside.
Like sticky fingers after too much cake on a birthday.
Like bedtime stories read twice because the child refuses to let the moment end.
Like the quiet reassurance that no matter what happens outside the door, there is always someone who will say “You are safe here. You are loved. You matter.”

Today, on World Day Against Child Labour, we carry the weight of the children whose laughter has been replaced by labour and whose dreams have been postponed just so they can get through another day.

And we refuse to look away.

Because no child should ever have to earn their right to rest.
No child should ever have to grow up just to survive.
And no small hand should ever be asked to carry the weight of a world that adults failed to protect them from.

What they deserve is not complicated.

A classroom. A playground. A chance.
A childhood.

💛 Every Child Belongs 💛

Sometimes people ask us why the work of the SA Children's Home matters so much.

The answer is simple.

Because every child belongs.

The children who come into our care are placed with us through the Children's Court. They do not choose the circumstances they are born into. They do not choose the neglect, abuse, abandonment, violence, addiction, or trauma that may surround them. They do not choose to lose the safety and security that every child deserves.

Yet so many of our children have endured hardships that no child should ever have to face.

Behind every child who arrives at our doors is a story that would break your heart.

A little one who has gone to bed hungry.

A child who has learned not to cry because no one came when they needed comfort.

A young person who has never known what it feels like to be truly safe.

Children who have experienced more pain in their short lives than many adults will ever know.

And still, despite everything, they arrive carrying something extraordinary.

Hope.

They arrive with dreams of becoming teachers, nurses, artists, mechanics, social workers, and leaders. They arrive wanting what every child wants: to be loved, to be accepted, to laugh, to play, to learn, and to believe that tomorrow can be better than yesterday.

At the SA Children's Home, we see beyond the pain.

We see brave children.

We see resilience.

We see potential.

We see bright futures waiting to unfold.

Every child who walks through our gates deserves the opportunity to heal. They deserve the chance to rediscover childhood. They deserve to know that they are valuable, that they matter, and that what happened to them does not define who they will become.

We cannot erase their past.

But together, we can help write the chapters that come next.

A chapter filled with safety.

A chapter filled with love.

A chapter filled with opportunity.

A chapter filled with hope.

Every warm meal, every school uniform, every winter jacket, every bedtime story, every word of encouragement, and every act of kindness tells a child something powerful:

"You matter."

"You are worthy of love."

"You have a future."

"You belong."

To every person who supports our Home, thank you.

Thank you for helping us give vulnerable children not only a place to stay, but a place where they can heal, grow, dream, and begin to believe in themselves again.

Because every child deserves a second chance.

Because every child deserves to feel safe.

Because every child deserves to know they are loved.

And because every child belongs. 💙🏡

In every decision made with care, every hour given without recognition, every responsibility carried when it feels heavy—you are there 🕊️

There are no words big enough for what it means to be part of this kind of work. Only gratitude. Deep, overwhelming gratitude 🌷

Thank you for showing up when it is hard.
Thank you for caring when it costs something.
Thank you for choosing compassion, again and again 💛

The impact of your service is not written in reports or minutes… it is written in children’s lives, in their healing, and in their future ✨
